A woman and her boyfriend have been accused of killing her mother and stepfather and dumping their bodies in a ravine in Mico, Texas.
Deputies responded to Stephen Rehbein’s home for a welfare check on Wednesday, April 8, after he didn’t show up to work, according to a news release shared by the Medina County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office said that authorities arrived at the home around 1 p.m. They tried to make contact though no one answered the front door, and they found evidence that indicated possible foul play.
Investigators were called to the scene, where they found additional evidence that suggested a crime took place at the home. Authorities obtained a search warrant, and they gathered information that identified vehicles that belonged to Rehbein.
One of the vehicles was then located traveling in the Corpus Christi area. Authorities tracked down the vehicle and stopped it to check on Rehbein, though they instead found suspects Cassandra Lange and Joby Williams, as well as two children, in the car.
Police quickly learned that Lange, 29, is the daughter of Cherry Rehbein, who was married to Stephen Rehbein.
While speaking to investigators, Lange allegedly admitted that she and Williams, 30, killed her mother and stepfather. She reportedly added that they disposed of their bodies in a ravine.
It is not currently clear if they had a motive in the alleged killings.
Investigators immediately started searching the area where Lange said they buried the bodies, and they found two large black garbage bags that were hidden in a deep ravine.
The two bodies were recovered and transported to a medical examiner’s office for autopsy, where they were identified as Lange’s mother and stepfather.
The suspects were taken into custody, and both were charged with capital murder. They are both being held on $1 million bond. It is not currently clear if either Lange or Williams have entered pleas or retained legal counsel in light of their arrests.
The Medina County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to Us Weekly’s request for comment regarding the case.
MCSO Sheriff Randy Brown said in the news release that Lange and Williams were captured about seven hours after authorities received the welfare check call.
“The swift coordination and diligent efforts of all agencies involved allowed this case to be rapidly developed and the suspects to be apprehended in a timely manner,” Brown said.
The two children — who are 6 years old and 1-month-old — that were found in the car were placed with Child Protective Services and were later reunited with family members, according to police.
