Two men have been arrested after one man followed his wife’s boyfriend across state lines, which ended in a violent fight at a grocery store parking lot.
Raymond Jett was charged with one count of assault and battery in the third degree and three counts of unlawful neglect of a child, while Edward McGill has been accused of attempted murder.
The two men got into an altercation on the afternoon of Sunday, May 24, when Jett, 60, took his three children with him from North Carolina to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where he confronted McGill, 59, about his relationship with his wife outside of a Food Lion grocery store.
Jett found his wife and McGill at the Food Lion on 38th Avenue North around 5:45 p.m., according to a police report obtained by WMBF. He first decided to leave a note on McGill’s windshield before he allegedly waited for McGill to leave the store.
As McGill started to load his groceries into his car, Jett was seen running toward the other man. Witnesses said that the two men got into an argument before Jett punched McGill in the head, according to law enforcement.
Jett and McGill fought for a bit before they separated. McGill then allegedly got a metal baseball bat from his car and started hitting Jett in the head and upper body until he fell to the ground, according to multiple videos recorded by witnesses and viewed by authorities.
One witness told authorities that they could hear the bat making a “ping, ping, ping” sound as McGill continued to hit Jett, according to WBTW. McGill continued to hit Jett until a bystander intervened and took the bat away from McGill, per an affidavit viewed by WMBF.
After the bat was taken away from him, McGill reportedly “re-engaged” with Jett and continued to attack him until police reported to the scene.
McGill was arrested at the scene, while Jett was arrested one day later on Monday, May 25.
McGill is currently in custody at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center and is being held on a $300,000 bond. Meanwhile, Jett was booked in the Myrtle Beach Jail and has since been released.
It is not currently known if either Jett or McGill have entered pleas following their arrests. The Myrtle Beach Police Department did not immediately respond to Us Weekly’s request for comment regarding the case.
The investigation into the case remains ongoing.
