A New Mexico man allegedly fatally shot his longtime partner while their five children were home before he died by suicide in a horrific murder-suicide.
The Las Cruces Police Department announced in a news release that officers responded to the family’s residence around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, after they received a report of the shootings. Upon their arrival, officers found the deceased bodies of Angelica Aguirre and her boyfriend, Shane Perez.
“Las Cruces police investigators believe Perez shot Aguirre before turning the gun on himself,” the police department wrote.
Authorities added that Aguirre, 30, and Perez, 46, share five children, who range in age from 3 to 14 years old. All of the children were home at the time of the incident.
Following the tragedy, the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department placed the children in the care of a family member.
Police have not yet revealed if they believe there was a potential motive in the killings, and it’s not currently known if the couple had a history of domestic violence.
The Las Cruces Police Department did not immediately respond to Us’ request for comment regarding updates in the case. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
The murder-suicide likely came as a shock to many, as Aguirre seemingly depicted a happy life and relationship on her social media accounts by sharing photos of family outings and loving posts dedicated to Perez.
In June 2025, Aguirre paid tribute to Perez on Father’s Day in a sentimental Facebook post.
“I’d like to extend a heartfelt Happy Father’s Day wish to Shane Perez, acknowledging the profound impact you have on those around you and celebrating the incredible difference you make in their lives,” she wrote alongside photos of Perez with their children. “For being a constant source of support and guidance for your family every step of the way. We love you too the moon and back happy Father’s day.”
Two months later, she continued to celebrate Perez by wishing him a happy birthday. “I would like to wish a happy birthday to Shane Perez we love you too the moon and back hope you have a great day today love you,” she captioned two photos of him via Facebook.
Aguirre was also a loving mother, and she shared tributes to her children on their birthdays and special occasions.
