Alyson Hannigan on How I Met Your Mother Fan Theories About the Finale: “We Could All Be Dead”

Before the How I Met Your Mother finale airs on March 31, series star Alyson Hannigan weighs in on the fan theory that the titular mother is actually dead

Is How I Met Your Mother taking a page from Lost's playbook? As fans await the hour-long finale of Ted Mosby's nine-season search for love, many viewers are convinced that the titular mother they've heard so much about is actually dead — a theory that series star Alyson Hannigan would neither confirm nor deny in a recent interview with Time magazine.

"We could all be dead. Who knows?" Hannigan, a.k.a. Lily Aldrin, joked. "But I just love that…people are still trying to figure out the end. As Barney [Neil Patrick Harris] would say, 'Wait for it!'"

Asked whether she was worried that the finale wouldn't live up to fans' expectations, the American Pie alum replied, "I would have been worried about it before I actually knew how the show was going to end. The script was just amazing and wonderful and happy and sad and all of the above." (As she told Jimmy Kimmel on Tuesday, "the writers really wrapped the show up the way the fans would want it to be wrapped up.")

That said, she doesn't want to be out among the masses when the finale airs next week. "A lot of my Twitter followers asked if I was going to go to New York and be there, because they watch it at the bar that MacLaren's [the pub on the show] is based on, but I won't be able to do that," Hannigan, 40, told Time, noting that she's shooting a pilot for More Time With Family the next day. "Besides, all the blubbering I'll do, I should probably stay at home. I shouldn't be out in public."

The CBS star also talked about whether she planned to tell her own kids her "how I met your dad" story. (Married since 2003, she and husband Alexis Denisof have two daughters, Satyana, 5, and Keeva, 22 months.)

"I could show them, when they're old enough," she said. "I can say, 'This is [Dad's] first episode on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and this is the prom episode where I realized I really liked this guy, then Mommy freaked out and we didn't date for a year.'"
