Gilmore Girls remains a beloved cult classic rewatched by fans year after year during the cozy autumnal season, but that doesn’t mean all story lines were created equal.

Gilmore Girls ran for seven seasons from 2000 to 2007, following mother-daughter duo Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel) in the fictional town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut. (The cast later reunited for a limited series revival, titled A Year in the Life, of Netflix in 2016.)

As Lorelai and Rory both grew up — they were 32 and 16, respectively, in the canon of the pilot — loyal viewers got a glimpse of their various adventures in education, career and dating. That’s not to say that the Gilmores’ antics always made sense to the fans and cast alike.

Lorelai and Rory’s Estrangement

At the end of season 5, the close mother-daughter pair were at odds when Rory dropped out of Yale University after her internship boss (boyfriend Logan Huntzberger’s father, Mitchum) didn’t think she had the skills to make it as a professional journalist. Abruptly dropping out of school, Rory moved into her grandparents’ house (played by Kelly Bishop and the now-late Edward Hermann) and seldom spoke to her mom. Their rift lasted until the end of season 6 when Rory decided to re-enroll at Yale.

“It was hard to play. I remember asking [series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino], I was like, ‘I don’t think people like this and … it’s hard to justify,’” Graham said on the “Hey Dude … The ‘90s Called” podcast in October 2026, noting the estrangement felt “out of character” for both Lorelai and Rory.

Lane Becomes a Mom

In season 7, Lane’s life as an aspiring drummer hit the back burner when she discovered that she was expecting twins.

“It was so sudden. Everything that happened in Lane’s life — especially at the very end — was really quick,” actress Keiko Agena exclusively told Us of her role in 2018. “She’s fighting with Zack and then all of a sudden she’s engaged to Zack and in an instant she gets pregnant after having sex for the first time during their honeymoon.”

In the early seasons, Lane hid her music passions from her mother (literally under floorboards) and dated bandmate Dave (Adam Brody). When Dave went off to college in California, Lane continued playing music with their bandmates Zach (Todd Lowe) and Brian (John Cabrera). Lane realized in season 5 that she had romantic feelings for Zach, who was often seen as a lothario.

“I think, story-wise, it’s hard for Lane,” Agena added to Us. “I wish she was able to do more with music.”

Objectifying Luke

During a season 3 scene, Lorelai and BFF Sookie (Melissa McCarthy) couldn’t stop talking about friend Luke’s (Scott Patterson) butt as he helped them renovate their inn.

“I realize it wasn’t OK and it didn’t make me feel comfortable at all. It made me feel embarrassed, actually,” Patterson admitted on a 2022 episode of his “I Am All In” rewatch podcast. “It’s infuriating to be treated that way because you’re being treated like an object. It’s disturbing and disgusting and I had to endure it through that scene and many takes.”

He added, “Put yourself in my place. Standing there in front of all those people filming. This is how the creator of that show sees that character. You can humiliate him and take away his dignity and that’s OK. And it wasn’t OK with me.”

Dean’s Teen Marriage

After Dean (Jared Padalecki) and Rory break up in season 2, he moves on with Lindsay (Arielle Kebbel). The pair eventually get married at age 19 — months before Dean has an affair with Rory.

During a 2022 interview with the Chicago Tribune, Padalecki claimed filming Dean’s wedding felt like a “nightmare” because he was unprepared as an actor.

“It was basically the feeling of that nightmare where you’re naked at school, except unlike being naked at school, this was naked at school and there are cameras everywhere and it will be on film for all time,” he recalled. “So now, these days, I’m known for my over-preparation. If there’s any scene in the episode we’re shooting, I know it backward and forward, because I don’t want to have that feeling again.”

Lorelai and Luke Break Up

After years of a will-they-won’t-they arc, Lorelai and Luke finally start dating in season 5 and even planned to say “I do.” The characters, however, called it quits before making it down the aisle after Lorelai issued her beau an ultimatum. (Luke refused to answer, claiming he needed to consider his then-newly discovered teen daughter, April, first.)

“It just seemed so out of character that I literally blocked it from my memory,” Graham told Entertainment Weekly in 2016.

Lorelai Gets Married to Christopher

After years of Lorelai dating around, she ends up marrying Rory’s father (played by David Sutcliffe) during a trip to Paris in season 7.

“Well, in many ways, this was a tough year and sort of a jumble for me, memory-wise,” Graham recalled of filming season 7 in her 2016 memoir, Talking As Fast as I Can. “For example, apparently during this season Christopher and Lorelai get married in Paris. OK. I have to admit, this seemed so odd to me back then (especially after all that time apart; I just didn’t think Lorelai would get married without Rory present), that I somehow managed to completely forget it ever happened.”

The marriage, however, was short-lived as Lorelai still had feelings for her then-ex Luke.
