Taking it day by day. Kate Gosselin opened up to Dr. Mehmet Oz on The Dr. Oz Show about being a single mother during an emotional interview, which is set to air Thursday, December 15.
“I’m really outnumbered right now and I have to kind of be the mom and the dad. It’s been double duty and there’s nobody to back me up. It’s really challenging,” Gosselin, 41, said. “There are so many single moms and dads out there, and we are all just trying to pick up the pieces together. It’s hard.”
The reality star and her ex-husband, Jon Gosselin, famously split in 2009 after 10 years of marriage. The pair are parents of eight children — 16-year-old twins Mady and Cara, and 12-year-old sextuplets Leah, Hannah, Alexis, Joel, Aaden and Collin.
Kate and John’s messy split has affected the kids — positively and negatively, she said. “We’ve pulled tighter. They are a lot more emphatic, whether you see it or not,” she explained. “The bad is, unfortunately, they feel torn a lot between parents and that’s understandable, but hard to digest for all of us.”
During the sit-down, Dr. Oz also shared footage from Kate’s show, Kate Plus 8 (of course, the show premiered back in 2007 as Jon & Kate Plus 8). Kate got choked up while watching the clip, which showed the sextuplets as babies.
“I do wish that there was an option that you could press a button and I could go back to that baby routine and go back for a week and kiss them more. … You can do no wrong. And now I just do everything wrong,” Kate said in the TLC clip. “Ten years ago, if you would have said that I was a single mom and divorced, I would have thought, ‘Crap, down a parent.’ I’m glad I didn’t know.”
