Today is where your book begins! In honor of the 10th anniversary of The Hills’ MTV debut on May 31, 2006, Lauren Conrad opens up exclusively in the new issue of Us Weekly and reveals why she got so upset and desperately tried to leave Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt‘s April 2009 wedding.
Conrad, 30 — who met Montag in college before their notorious falling out — parted ways with the show during season 5, and her final scenes were shot at Montag and Pratt’s nuptials.
The lifestyle blogger, who wed William Tell in September 2014, remembers that she only had a short time to film the episode because she was hurrying off to an event with then-boyfriend Kyle Howard, and things got even more complicated when the electricity in the church went out.
“The power went out, the generator went out and I said, ‘I need to leave!'” Conrad recalls. “And [producers] wouldn’t let me leave! They literally locked me in the basement with two security guards and wouldn’t let me leave! And I was like, ‘You can’t keep me here!’ I was throwing a fit!” (Producer Adam DiVello, meanwhile, says Conrad “might have felt locked in, but she was not.”)
Two hours later, it was finally time to film the wedding. As soon as the ceremony ended, the bestselling Celebrate author quietly made her exit, not even bothering to exchange pleasantries with her costars.
“At that point, this wasn’t really my life anymore, and I left out the [church’s] side door, so that’s why in the final scene, I’m not leaving with everyone else — I’m taking a side exit out because I had a car waiting, and I needed to leave!” she says.
