Best Supporting Actress winner Melissa Leo may have made jaws drop at Sunday's Academy Awards when she let the F-bomb fly during her acceptance speech, but The Fighter star says it was never her intention to shock and awe.
"I really don't mean to offend, and [the Oscars were] probably a very inappropriate place to use that particular word," Leo, 50, told reporters backstage after accepting her trophy.
Referencing Oscar winner Kate Winslet during her acceptance speech, Leo said, "When I watched Kate two years ago, it looked so f—ing easy."
(During the telecast, her cuss-word was already bleeped out.) Leo instantly covered her mouth following the gaffe as the crowd laughed.
As she took the stage to claim her first Oscar, Leo credited presenter Kirk Douglas, 94, with keeping her calm.
"He was doing us all this huge favor, because the longer he strung [the winner announcement] out, the calmer I got to be," Leo said of Douglas, who lightened the mood further by flirting with Leo. "You're much more beautiful than you were in The Fighter," Douglas joked. Leo's quick-witted reply: "You're pretty good looking yourself. What are you doing later on?"
Oscar co-host Anne Hathaway was tickled by Leo's off-the-cuff speech.
"Wow, I thought the 'F' stood for The Fighter," Hathaway joked. "It's the young and hip Oscars!"
