Summer is still in full swing – school is still out, most people are using their vacation days to enjoy the nice weather and blockbuster movies like The Odyssey and (soon) Spider-Man: Brand New Day are dominating movie theaters.
But Netflix isn’t waiting to promote some of its biggest upcoming movies and TV shows in the fall.
The streamer just dropped a teaser for one of its under-the-radar projects, Below, that promises to be one of the season’s breakout hits on par with this season’s Widow’s Bay on Apple TV.
Spooky and mysterious, it does what every good teaser should so – show just enough footage to make the viewer hungry to watch more.
Watch With Us’ appetite is now ravenous, and we think Below has the potential to be one of 2026’s scariest shows. Find out why and everything else you need to know about Below.

When Does ‘Below’ Start Streaming?
Below is scheduled to start streaming on Netflix on October 8.
How Many Episodes Does ‘Below’ Have?
Six. All episodes will be released on the same day, so you can binge it all in one sitting. We recommend you watch one episode and then take a short break. It looks like it’s intense!
What Is ‘Below’ About?

Netflix is being cagey about revealing too much of what Below is really about – and what exactly is stalking Hartnett and the town in the trailer. Here’s the official synopsis:
“Calvin (Josh Hartnett) is a fisherman whose small village is under attack by a violent creature. As locals succumb to mayhem brought on by strange events, and Calvin’s son Wade (Charlie Heaton) starts exhibiting terrifying new symptoms, our hero teams up with Fonda (Mackenzie Davis), a marine biologist, to uncover what secrets lie beneath the water.”
Where Was ‘Below’ Filmed?
Below was shot on location in Newfoundland, Canada. Speaking to Netflix’s online magazine Tudum, creator Jesse McKeown shared his love for the region.
“It’s such a unique landscape and so rugged, dangerous, isolated, and scary in a lot of ways. But then there’s also this other side to it — the community is so warm, and the people are so funny, and there are many eccentricities about the place.”
Who Stars in ‘Below’?

Here’s an incomplete list of Below’s cast:
Josh Hartnett as Calvin Penney
Mackenzie Davis as Fonda Howander
Charlie Heaton as Wade Penney
Natasha Henstridge as Jan
Joshua Close as Officer Jaxon Noseworthy
Rohan Campbell as Jay Penney
Willow Kean as Ruth Penney
Ruby Stokes as Mary Penney
Kaleb Horn as Noah
Mary Walsh
It’s worth noting that most of the cast are horror veterans. Hartnett began his career in the genre with the 1-2 punch releases of Halloween: H20 as Laurie Strode’s (Jamie Lee Curtis) and The Faculty as a drug-dealing teen fighting aliens. He also just recently appeared in M. Night Shyamalan’s excellent serial-killer thriller, Trap.
Another Halloween franchise alum, Rohan Campbell, was the lead in the last Halloween movie, Halloween Ends, which has plenty of haters and a growing cult of fans who appreciate the film.
Charlie Heaton is still best known for his time on Stranger Things, while Nastasha Henstridge gained fame in the ‘90s by starring as the shapeshifting alien Sil in 1995’s Species and 1998’s Species II.
Why Is ‘Below’ a Must-Watch Netflix Show?

The success of Widow’s Bay earlier this summer showed there’s still an appetite for small-screen horror shows that are scary, provocative and have an oddball sense of humor. Below promises to add to that by weaving a story that borrows heavily from Jaws and Invasion of the Body Snatchers while also being its own unique thing.
Newfoundland is a beautiful location, but also a spooky one, and the teaser trailer really gives a sense of dread that few horror shows – ahem, Stranger Things – lack. In addition. Below continues the Josh Hartnett renaissance that began with Trap and continued with the bonkers airplane thriller Fight or Flight. The Black Hawk Down actor deserves a breakout streaming hit, and Below just might be it.
