Schmidt and Cece, together again! The New Girl season 4 finale might have seen the loftmates say goodbye to Coach in the name of love, but it also featured a monumental relationship development for two other characters. Max Greenfield‘s Schmidt and Hannah Simone‘s Cece not only got back together, but they also got engaged!

That’s right — Schmidt and Cece are getting married, and Greenfield was just as eager for their reconciliation as the audience was.

“Look, I was impatient! I was like, how long are we going to sit in limbo here? But I’m happy it was resolved and I’m happy that it went the way that it did,” the actor, 34, told Us Weekly. “I can’t imagine it going any other way.”

Simone, also 34, told Us that if you were to predict based on the first episode of New Girl which two characters would wind up getting married, you would not pick Schmidt and Cece. “I remember the pilot when Cece meets Schmidt, I never would have thought five episodes later they would have been in bed together, that he was who I was going to be hooked up with,” she confessed.

Their path to engagement wasn’t an easy one, though. They broke up after Schmidt betrayed Cece’s trust, and a reconciliation had to feel natural. It had to happen “in a way respectful toward Cece,” Simone said. “That’s a huge way he hurt her, so we had to give her enough time to forgive, to rebuild the friendship, to rebuild the trust so that as an audience we would root for them again. It feels so earned and everyone is so excited for how this season has ended.”

So what’s the next step for the lovebirds? “I think the obvious is that now that they’re engaged — we’ve been to 700 weddings on this show. We’re actually going to have our first in-house wedding, and I think it becomes about planning the wedding,” Greenfield dished.

And yes, the rest of the roommates are as excited about the engagement as the fiancees themselves, he added.

“The amount of times that I’ve had to have conversations with Jake Johnson as Schmidt talking to Nick about how great Cece is and that he’ll never get her back — I think both Jake and the character are both pretty happy that’s not ever going to be a conversation again.”

New Girl will return to Fox in the fall for season 5.
