Once Upon a Time Recap: Regina Becomes the New Savior

Hook (Colin O'Donoghue) and Emma (Jennifer Morrison)
Hook (Colin O'Donoghue) and Emma (Jennifer Morrison) take in Camelot on Once Upon a Time.

Once Upon a Time may have temporarily taken one Savior away, but that doesn’t mean another one wouldn’t eventually sprout up in its place. (Saviors: they’re just like daisies!) “The Price” served as a great reminder of just how complex the line between good and evil truly is. It also teased where Merlin (Elliot Knight) is and what the Dark Swan intends to do now that they’re all back in Storybrooke. Let’s dig in!

The Giving Tree

Money may not grow on trees, but in Camelot, Merlins apparently grow inside of them. It turns out Merlin doesn’t actually need to be found after all. King Arthur (Liam Garrigan) knows exactly where his wizard friend is — trapped inside a very old tree. And while it’s unclear how or why this happened, Arthur seemed confident that the Savior would be the key to Merlin’s eventual release.

Shall We Dance?

But the Savior job title is going on a different character’s resume these days. Now that Emma (Jennifer Morrison) is the Dark One, Regina (Lana Parrilla) decided it would be best if she took up the hero mantel and claimed to be the Savior instead. This prompted Arthur to throw a ball in Regina’s honor. But what started out as a night full of happiness and dancing soon turned into a nightmare of tears and bloodshed. Evidently, Percival (Andrew Jenkins) recognized Regina from her Evil Queen days, when she burnt his childhood town to the ground, and he was desperate for revenge.

Luckily, David (Josh Dallas) managed to kill Percival before he could harm Regina, but he also ended up fatally stabbing Robin Hood (Sean Maguire). Since the sword was enchanted, Regina’s magic was powerless to save him, which meant it was up to Emma to use her dark magic. But as her inner-Rumpelstiltskin (Robert Carlyle) stated — all magic comes with a price — so if Regina wanted magic, then she’d have to pay for it. The only question was, how?

Hell Hath No Fury

Back in the present day, the people of Storybrooke were having a hard time adjusting to the fact that Emma is now full-on Dark Swan. Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) even tried fixing Emma with true love’s kiss, but to no avail. However, the Dark One wasn’t the only magical being these guys had to worry about throughout the episode. A Fury showed up and abducted Robin in the hopes of dragging him to the underworld. Why? Apparently, a Fury is a magical bounty hunter of sorts. So when Regina had Emma save Robin’s life in Camelot and neglected to pay a price, the Fury take it upon themselves to take the life back.

Regina ended up sacrificing herself to save him, but when Mary Margaret (Ginnifer Goodwin), David, and the others joined in, they overpowered the Fury and destroyed it. Looks like the gang thinks Regina is officially a new Savior worth believing in.

When Two Become One

No, this is not in reference to the popular Spice Girls song. This is in regards to Emma’s eventual endgame as the Dark One. After going home for the night, Emma was once again visited by her inner-Rumpel, who informed her of her next task. Family, friends, and love are the things that have held former Dark Ones back in the past, which is why she must accomplish what no other Dark One has before — she must reunite the dagger with Excalibur (which just so happens to be hiding out in her basement), so that she can use it to snuff out the light within her forever. The only problem is, she’ll have to get someone to pull it out of the stone for her. Yup, this is definitely going to end well…
