OMG! The spring finale of Pretty Little Liars was the episode every Pretty Little Liars fan had been waiting for, the reveal of the Big A, the biggest psychopath the series has ever had (and it’s had a lot of psychopaths!).
Who was Big A after all this time? Who was he/her/it/bitch? Drumroll, please.
The Big A is Charles. As in, #CharlesIsA. As in, Charles DiLaurentis? Being Pretty Little Liars, there are now more questions than answers, but that’s always been part of the insane fun.
“Who is Charles,” you might be wondering. Based on the episode’s reveal, however, it appears Charles just might be a long lost DiLaurentis twin. But it’s not Ali (Sasha Pieterse) who has the secret twin — it’s quite possibly Jason’s (Drew Van Acker).
Crazy how Spencer was able to get the name of Charles from a dream based solely on anagram decoding, but that’s just par for the course with Spencer Hastings (Troian Bellisario). The big bomb was the home movie footage of Mrs. DiLaurentis (Andrea Parker) and her children — baby Alison, Jason, and “Charles” — out for a fun day of apple picking.
In true Pretty Little Liars fashion, that wasn’t the only crazy twist and turn in the episode. For starters, A managed to hijack the girls in their police transport van, and he took them to his dollhouse of horrors where a very much alive (and blonde) Mona Vanderwaal (Janel Parrish) was co-playing Alison DiLaurentis in disturbing fashion.
They lived out tea time, game time, and a senior prom that could only be described as “a terrifying circus of mannequins and living nightmares” (set to the musical stylings of Natasha Bedingfield’s “Unwritten”), all while trying their best to escape A’s grasp.
Does all of this explain the fact that Andrew (Brandon W. Jones) was listening in on the Hastings’ phone calls at one point? Signs point to him possibly being Charles, especially since A’s lair was at what is presumably Andrew’s family’s orchard.
Also, now Spencer’s parents are in the know when it comes to all things A, finally giving Team Liars some adults who just might actually be able to handle the legal insanity that’s typically thrown their way. Now if only they could find a way to make Tanner (Roma Maffia) better at her job as a cop, but this is Rosewood after all — miracles don’t just happen. Along with Toby (Keegan Allen), Ezra (Ian Harding), and Caleb’s (Tyler Blackburn) help, they were able to find A’s lair, but they weren’t able to find the nightmare warehouse where he’s holding the girls.
That means, sadly, the girls were not able to escape, and they’ve probably only made A/Charles angry on top of all of his crazy. Mona gave a description of all the torture he’d inflicted on her just to get her to play along with his Alison fantasy, so let’s just hope the girls make it through this. We may know who A is now, but it isn’t going to be a smooth ride at all. Mona may have believed by the end of the episode that “A has a soul,” but all signs point to the contrary, now don’t they?
Tell Us: What do you think is Charles’ deal? And what about Andrew? Can you believe Mona is alive?
