Richard Gere and Diana Silvers star in a romance film about an age gap romance — but how far apart in age are the costars?

A photo was released on Monday, July 6, showing Gere, 76, and Silvers, 28, on set of Asymmetry in New York City. The duo were all smiles as production was underway on the film, which is based on Lisa Halliday’s novel Asymmetry.

According to the official synopsis, Asymmetry “tells the story of a young editorial assistant in New York, Alice [Silvers], who comes upon world-renowned 70-year-old author Ezra [Gere] in Central Park one day.” (Alice is 25 at the start of Halliday’s novel.)

The description continued: “Their one moment of eye contact sparks a connection that leads them both down a life-changing rabbit hole, where they create a private world just for two. Ezra, famous for his audacious work, finds someone with whom he can be openly vulnerable, and Alice finds the courage to explore her own aspirations as a writer. Until it is all put at risk when their secret relationship is exposed.”

Asymmetry will be directed by Edward Zwick, who also cowrote the script with Marshall Herskovitz and Halliday.

While Gere is 70 in the movie, he is 76 in real life. Silvers, for her part, is 28 off screen, which makes her 48 years younger than Gere. They joined a multitude of other TV shows and movies that center around a controversial age gap.

Pretty Little Liars, which premiered in 2010, introduced viewers to Aria (Lucy Hale) and Ezra (Ian Harding). While some fans rooted for the fictional couple, many weren’t as thrilled by the problematic aspect of Aria dating her teacher, Ezra.

Over a decade later, Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage focused on the titular couple’s happy ending — despite a 12-year age difference — after the characters met on the Big Bang Theory‘s Young Sheldon prequel.

“It gives Georgie somewhere to go,” Montana Jordan, who plays Georgie, noted to Us Weekly in October 2024. “In this new show, Georgie finally gets to show that he’s not just this dumb kid. He actually does have a brain on him. And on Young Sheldon I’m sure he got overlooked a lot. Maybe him being the tire king is his way of showing and proving people that he is not this dumb kid [but a mature adult]. He actually has some brains on him.”

ABC, meanwhile, has an age gap romance between Tim Allen and Jenna Elfman on Shifting Gears.

“The age difference is not much different than my wife and I,” Allen, 73, who has been married to wife Jane Hajduk since 2006, told Us in June 2026.

Allen noted that his response to the age gap varies, adding, “It depends on the pictures. It gets creepy for me at a certain age [and] we’re right at that border. If Jenna didn’t look so damn nice than our age gap is not that much. I just let my hair go natural and she just looks — especially on camera — quite young.”

He continued: “They say when you’re lit better and I go, ‘When I’m lit better, I look probably 68.’ I just don’t want to be creepy about it — and that’s kind of the borderline image these days. It hasn’t really come out — except when they joke about, ‘Well, a guy your age.’ When they have her making jokes about it, it’s not my preference.”
