Richard Gere

Richard Gere is an actor best known for his performances in American Gigolo, An Officer and a Gentleman and Chicago. Gere spent his childhood in Philadelphia and is the second of five children. A man of many talents, Gere played a number of instruments throughout his childhood and attended the University of Massachusetts in Amherst on a gymnastics scholarship where he pursued a degree in philosophy. Two years later, however, he dropped out for a career in acting.

In 1977 he starred alongside Diane Keaton in Looking for Mr. Goodbar, where he gained praise. He went on to star as a male escort in American Gigolo (1980), but it was his role as Zack Mayo in An Officer and a Gentleman (1982) that solidified his status as a mainstream heartthrob. He continued to impress with roles in chick-flicks like Pretty Woman (1990) and Runaway Bride (1999), both of which he costarred with Julia Roberts.

In 2003, Gere won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for his role as Billy Flynn in Chicago. In 2009, he costarred with Don Cheadle and Ethan Hawke in Brooklyn’s Finest. That same year, he also costarred with Oscar winner Hilary Swank in Amelia. Some of his later appearances include Norman (2016), Three Christs (2017), Oh, Canada (2024) and Longing (2024).

Gere married model Cindy Crawford in 1991, but the couple divorced in 1995. He later wed actress Carey Lowell in 2002 but the pair called it quits in 2013. Gere and Lowell share a son, Homer (born in 2000). He later moved on with Alejandra Silva, getting married in 2018. They share two sons, who were born in 2019 and 2020, respectively.
