The season 2 trailer for RJ Decker revealed more details about the ambitious Dancing With the Stars crossover — which includes cameos from Joey Graziadei, Jenna Johnson and Val Chmerkovskiy.
In Us‘ exclusive debut of the sneak peek, RJ (Scott Speedman) has his fair share of new cases, with each one more outrageous than the last. ABC fans got a fun surprise with more clips from the season 2 premiere, which features Graziadei, 31, in a scripted role while Johnson, 32, and Chmerkovskiy, 40, are seen showing off their dance skills in separate clips.
“Nice moves out there,” RJ tells Graziadei’s character, who is seen seemingly pickpocketing people. “I got pictures of you in the act.”
The arc involving Graziadei is presumably connected to a case mentioned elsewhere in the promo when RJ accuses a guy of robbing banks with his friends “without their pants on.”
Based on Carl Hiaasen‘s novel Double Whammy, RJ Decker focuses on a disgraced newspaper photographer and ex-con who “starts over as a private investigator in the colorful-if-crime-filled world of South Florida, tackling cases that range from slightly odd to outright bizarre, with the help of his journalist ex, her police detective wife and a shadowy new benefactor — a woman from his past who could be his greatest ally … or his one-way ticket back to prison.”
Speedman plays the titular role while Jaina Lee Ortiz, Kevin Rankin, Adelaide Clemens and Bevin Bru round out the rest of the cast.
The season 1 finale of the hit series ended on a shocking note when Emi’s (Ortiz) father, Victor (David Zayas), was killed after being arrested — and then released — for his crimes.
“Victor was constructed to go away in a ninth and final episode, just as we kind of looked — I don’t know when we settled on it. It was probably sort of the midpoint of our season that it felt appropriate,” creator Robert Doherty told TV Insider in April. “It felt like a good punctuation mark at the end of our various first-season arcs.”
Us‘ first look at season 2 teases that Emi hires RJ after assuming that since her dad was “killed by someone dangerous,” it has to be related or potentially to organized crime.
“As brilliant as Emi is, it’s the one thing she couldn’t have seen coming, and she’ll have to sort of pick her way through that,” Doherty previously detailed. “And I think that will make it harder to be around RJ, at least in the short term. Not because she blames him, but because it’s hard to look at RJ and not sort of be reminded of the path that ultimately led to her dad getting gunned down in his home.”
Dancing With the Stars premieres with a two-night event on ABC and Disney+ starting Tuesday, September 15, at 8 p.m. ET. RJ Decker returns Tuesday, September 15, at 10 p.m. ET.
