Wigging out — in so many ways!
In a crazy, yet completely welcome surprise, Sia enlisted the help of actress Kristen Wiig during her “Chandelier” performance at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards at L.A.’s Staples Center on Sunday, Feb. 8. The Australian native recreated the song’s music video for the star-studded crowd and — no shock here — hid her face while belting out the electropop ballad.
Wiig, 41, was also joined by 12-year-old Maddie Ziegler, who reprised her role from the mesmerizing, haunting music video. The duo both wore platinum shoulder-length blonde wigs and handpainted outfits that blended into the drab background. The Saturday Night Live alum and Ziegler then stripped each other down to nude leotards and did an interpretive dance. (Lena Dunham played Wiig’s part during Sia’s SNL performance in June 2014.) Sia, for her part, had her back toward the audience and faced the wall while singing.
Ziegler rose to fame on the Lifetime series Dance Moms in 2011 and also appears with Shia LaBeouf in Sia’s video for “Elastic Heart.” Before the haunting performance, Sia and the young dancer stepped out on the red carpet in large, head-turning wigs.
Since its June 2014 release, “Chandelier” has garnered over 519 million YouTube views. Back in December, Rolling Stone magazine placed it at No. 1 in its 10 Best Music Videos of 2014 list and No. 15 for its 50 Best Songs of the year roundup. Sia, 39, wrote “Chandelier” about her past battle with alcohol and drugs. It’s her first solo single since 2010 and is off her sixth studio album, 1000 Forms of Fear.
Sia was up for four awards at this year’s Grammys for her “Chandelier” smash: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Music Video, and Best Pop Solo Performance. In 2013, her “Wild Ones” song with Flo Rida was nominated in the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration category.
