Weekend Box Office: The Possession Debuts at No. 1 With $17.7 Million

The Possession easily topped the box office in its opening weekend, raking in $17.7 million. The supernatural horror movie, starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick, played in 2,816 theaters in the United States.

The Prohibition-era gangster film Lawless, starring Shia LaBeouf, Jessica Chastain and Tom Hardy, debuted in second place with $9.7 million. Directed by John Hillcoat, the film also stars Gary Oldman, Mia Wasikowska, Jason Clarke and Guy Pearce.

The Expendables 2 fell from No. 1 to No. 3, pulling in $8.8 million. Since its release three weeks ago, the action-packed film — starring Sylvester Stallone, Liam Hemsworth, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chuck Norris, Terry Crews and Dolph Lundgren — has earned more than $66 million.

Jeremy Renner's The Bourne Legacy dropped two spots to No. 4 with $7.2 million. ParaNorman, featuring the voices of Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Anna Kendrick, Casey Affleck, Leslie Mann and John Goodman — placed fifth with $6.6 million, while Jennifer Garner's Odd Life of Timothy Green placed sixth with $6.1 million.

Rounding out the top 10 were The Dark Knight Rises (No. 7, $5.9 million), The Campaign (No. 8, $5.4 million), 2016: Obama's America (No. 9, $5.1 million) and Hope Springs (No. 10, $4.7 million).
