January is usually a dumping ground for bad new movies, like 2005’s Alone in the Dark (with Tara Reid as a scientist!) and 2009’s Bride Wars, which pitted Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson against each other in an embarrassing comedy that contained zero laughs.

That changed in 2026, when director Sam Raimi unleashed his surprisingly great survival thriller comedy, Send Help. The movie, which stars Rachel McAdams as a low-level employee stranded on a desert island with her jerk boss, was a surprise hit at the box office, grossing nearly $100 million worldwide.

Critics liked it, too; Send Help has an impressive 93% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus that the film delivers all the thrills and laughs the trailer promised.

If you missed it in theaters, you’ll soon have the chance to watch it at home if you’re subscribed to the right streamer. Find out all the details you need to know below.

When meek corporate strategist Linda Liddle (McAdams) and her alpha-male new boss, Bradley Preston (Dylan O’Brien), miraculously survive a plane crash, they find themselves all alone on a deserted island in Thailand with no help on the way. They must overcome past grievances and work together to stay alive, but that’s easier said than done, as Bradley isn’t willing to be anyone’s subordinate, let alone Linda’s.

Linda relishes her powerful role and doesn’t want to give that up, not even when rescue is possible. It’s a battle of wits and wills between Linda and Bradley, and the victor might live long enough to enjoy the spoils.

Hell yes. The film is a return to form for Raimi, who started out making gonzo horror flicks like the first three Evil Dead movies. That gruesome touch is present in Send Help, which somehow manages to include the undead in its survival-thriller narrative. There’s also a plane crash sequence that’s both incredibly tense and very funny. (Always buckle your seatbelts, kids!)

It’s not all Raimi’s show, though. Teen Wolf vet Dylan O’Brien continues his recent resurgence as a character actor capable of playing heroes, and villains and everyone in between. His Bradley Preston is more of the former, a toxic nepo baby who learns very fast that nature doesn’t give a damn about who his father is or how much is in his bank account.

It’s no big revelation to claim that Mean Girls legend Rachel McAdams is one of our finest — and underrated —  actresses working today, and she’s in peak form in Send Help. Whether she’s escaping from a sinking plane or trying to romance her helpless boss, she keeps revealing layers to Linda that make one of the most fascinating — and formidable — heroines today.
