Name dropping! Year after year, it's standard for Oscar winners to thank loved ones, their film's cast and crew, and their inspirations — but who often comes out on top? The site Vocativ has analyzed over 1,396 Academy Award acceptance speeches to identify the most thanked person in Oscar history. Hint: It's not God!
The list notably reveals that mainly directors have been acknowledged the most in years past. Find out who came in at No. 1 and how many times each person was mentioned below:
1. Steven Spielberg – 42
2. Harvey Weinstein – 34
3. James Cameron – 28
4. George Lucas – 23
5. Peter Jackson – 22
6. God – 19
7. Lord of the Rings screenwriter Fran Walsh – 18
8. HBO Documentary Films president Sheila Nevins – 17
The final four, rounding out spots 9 and 10 with 15 shout-outs, are Francis Ford Coppola, Matrix and Lord of the Rings producer Barrie Osborne, Martin Scorsese, and Saul Zaentz.
Walsh, who's married to Jackson, and Nevins were the only females to make the top 10 list. A few honorable mentions include Robert Redford, Tim Burton, and George Clooney all coming in with 10 "thank yous" each.
