The Last of Us is taking an unexpected pause on production amid filming for season 3.

According to a production listing directory for projects filmed in British Columbia, Canada, The Last of Us was put on a temporary hiatus on Monday, June 1. The series, which goes by the pseudonym Calm Current, is expected to resume filming on Sunday, June 28. The pause is not expected to delay production.

Filming for season 3 kicked off in Vancouver in March. It is scheduled to conclude in November.

While no official reason was listed for the production pause, Canada is one of the hosts of the World Cup, which begins on Thursday, June 11. Canada will host 13 soccer matches in both Toronto and Vancouver. The World Cup ends on July 19.

The Last of Us is a post-apocalyptic drama based on the video game of the same name. The series follows a group of people who have survived a fungal infection that turns those infected into zombie-like monsters. The show focuses on a smuggler named Joel (Pedro Pascal) as he escorts immune teenager Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across America to the revolutionaries looking for a cure.

Season 2 surprised fans of the show after Pascal’s beloved character suffered a tragic death. However, those who played the video game were aware of Joel’s fate. Pascal shared that he was “in active denial” after the episode aired.

“I realize this more and more as I get older, I find myself slipping into denial that anything is over,” the actor said in an April 2025 Entertainment Weekly interview. “I know that I’m forever bonded to so many members of the experience and just have to see them under different circumstances but never will under the circumstances of playing Joel on The Last of Us.”

This upcoming season of The Last of Us will be shifting its narrative, as Ramsey will not be the focus. Kaitlyn Dever’s character, Abby, who was introduced in season 2, will be front and center.

“The scripts, the dialogue and the story is so amazing that I’m not at all going into season 3 with any sort of fear or hesitation,” Dever told Deadline in April 2025. “It’s pure excitement to be part of such a cool show.”

This isn’t the only change fans can expect in season 3. Earlier this year, it was confirmed that Jorge Lendeborg Jr. will be taking over the role of Manny following Danny Ramirez’s departure. Ramirez, who played Manny in season 2, had to exit the show due to scheduling conflicts.
