In-N-Out Burger is in the midst of a PR crisis that not even a large helping of animal-style fries can fix.
According to Washington D.C.-based reporter Gabe Schneider, who writes for publications such as Los Angeles Magazine and Rewire.News, the fast-food chain donated $25,000 to the California Republican Party on Tuesday, August 28.
Schneider uncovered the donation via a public filing on the Secretary of State’s website, and teased it on Twitter on Wednesday, August 29, by writing that the chain, which is known for having an array of off-menu items, “added a new item to their secret menu.”
Schneider’s revelation then ignited backlash for the Irvine-based burger restaurant on social media, as angry customers promptly began using the hashtag #BoycottInNOut. “I hate that In-N-Out has probably donated to the Republican Party before now, and I gave them my business,” one Twitter user wrote. “They are my #1 favorite. No more, though.”
Another wrote: “I’m a regular customer… BUT I cannot spent money with a company that supports the current GOP!”
However, not everyone was willing to say goodbye to their burgers and grilled cheese so quickly. “Sorry I will never #BoycottInNOut I don’t care who they donate to,” one Twitter user shared. Many others also brought up that although Monday’s donation was lofty, In-N-Out actually has a history of contributing to the California Republican Party.
In fact, per Los Angeles Magazine, the company donated $30,000 per year to the California GOP for general party expenses in 2016 and 2017. In other words, this donation isn’t exactly out of the ordinary.

Good! Maybe the lines will be shorter so I don’t have to wait so long…— Oliver Klosov (@oklosov) August 30, 2018
So sad to hear @innoutburger is making large donations to the Republican Party. You can’t both stand for Christian ideals and donate to Republicans at the same time, not at this point in history. My favorite burger place, but won’t be eating there anymore. #BoycottInNOut

I think I’ll have to fly to California just to buy a few now. Can you really blame them for donating to the party that is pro business and pro tax cuts? #BoycottInNOut
