Julia Roberts and Lucas Hedges may be costarring in the upcoming drama Ben Is Back in which she plays the worried mother to his drug-addicted character, but the actors are currently embroiled in a feud of sorts, which began after Hedges insulted the turkey Roberts cooked on Thanksgiving in 2017.
The playful fight played out over two nights on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Hedges, 21, stopped by on Monday, December 3, and talked about spending Thanksgiving with Roberts, 51, and her family the previous year at their “very nice” house.
When Colbert specifically inquired about the holiday meal, Hedges labeled it “delicious,” but when the host pressed a bit further and asked if the turkey was dry, Hedges answered: “[It was] a little dry.”
The saga continued the following night, Tuesday, December 4, when Colbert sat down with Roberts for the first time and got her take on the shared meal. “He was at our table last year,” the Oscar winner dished, noting Hedges was among the 22 guests that day. “That is a brave boy to come sit at that table with that many people that you do not know. And everyone he did know was at the other end of the table!”
Later, Colbert showed Roberts a clip of Hedges’ swipe at her cooking. “Listen, this next thing might be a little rough,” Colbert said before playing the video. “We asked Lucas last night about Thanksgiving with you.”
“Did you make him say something mean?” Roberts asked earnestly.
“I did not make him say something mean,” Colbert, 54, clarified, adding that Hedges’ admission wasn’t mean, “just honest.”
The Homecoming star remained skeptical as she watched the clip, and gasped as Hedges evaluated her turkey. Her mouth stayed agape as the audience laughed and clapped, awaiting the Hollywood heavyweight’s response.
After pausing for a few moments, Roberts retorted with her iconic laugh: “That’s the last f–ing turkey he’s getting at my house,” she quipped.
Ben Is Back is in theaters on Friday, December 7.
