The Kit Kat family is growing! After much speculation, the Hershey’s Company announced on Wednesday, April 24, that a brand-new version of the Kit Kat is slated to hit store shelves later this year.
Known officially as Kit Kat Duos Mint + Dark Chocolate, this new offering is the first permanent Kit Kat flavor to debut in the United States in nearly a decade. It’s expected to officially be available for purchase in December.
As you may have guessed, this confection will feature a mashup of two iconic flavors – mint and dark chocolate. Here’s how it works: The bar itself consists of two types of chocolate. The top layer is a pastel green mint crème variety, while the the bottom of the bar is coated in dark chocolate. Together, these layers surround that light and crispy wafer Kit Kat fans know and love, and the result is a two-toned treat that looks ridiculously delicious.
Until now, American Kit Kat eaters have only had a handful of options to choose from, including bars covered in white and dark chocolate. By contrast, candy fans across the world have enjoyed an array of unique and mouth-watering Kit Kat flavors for years.
For example, to commemorate the 45th anniversary of Kit Kat’s arrival in Japan in 2018, residents of that country were able to purchase a special box containing 35 different flavors of the sugary food, including strawberry tiramisu, passion fruit, raspberry, strawberry maple and purple sweet potato, among others.
This discrepancy has occurred in large part because Kit Kats outside the United States are manufactured by Nestlé, while the bars sold in America are made by Hershey.
However, the release of Kit Kat Duos Mint + Dark Chocolate is just the start for Hershey’s, which has finally realized that consumers want more flavors to choose from. Additional Duos varieties are expected to be announced in the coming months.
