Confused? Allow Us to explain. The basketball team, which just lost the 2019 NBA Championship to the Toronto Raptors, was part of the restaurant chain’s annual “Steal A Game, Steal A Taco” promotion. As the promo’s moniker implies, the championship-related gimmick gives customers the opportunity to get their hands on some free eats, depending on what happens during the NBA finals.

Since the Golden State Warriors “stole” Game 2 of the series by beating the Toronto Raptors on their home court, the free taco promotion was triggered. That means that from 2 to 6 p.m. local time, fans at any Taco Bell location in the United States or Canada can go get a Doritos Locos Taco free of charge, while supplies last.

Normally this annual promotion applies to Americans only, but since a Toronto team took the top prize this year, Taco Bell opted to extend the deal to our Canadian neighbors for the first time ever.

Believe it or not, Taco Bell is hardly the only fast-food chain that has given out free food because of the 2019 pro basketball season. Earlier this month it was reported that McDonald’s outposts in Ontario, Canada, had given out more than $5 million worth of free food thanks to a promotion that promised customers french fries at no charge whenever the Raptors scored 12 three-pointers in one game. Given the Raptors’ successful season, that happened quite frequently, thus costing the Golden Arches a pretty penny.
