April Fools’ Day has evolved into more than just fake relationship rumors and silly gags. In fact, even though the jokes are generally meant to encompass things we don’t want, a handful of food-related tricks that made the rounds on social media on Monday, April 1, sounds downright awesome. For example, mall and airport food staple Auntie Anne’s got in on the game early and began circulating rumors in late March that each of its more than 1,500 locations across the country would be converted into hot yoga studios starting on – when else? – April 1. “Each hot yoga studio will twist guests just like Auntie Anne’s scrumptious hand-rolled pretzels,” a (fake) press release claimed. The release also stated that each studio would smell like the “intoxicating scent of baking pretzels” and feature an instructor certified in the eatery’s proprietary hand-rolling techniques. Unfortunately, it was all part of an elaborate prank. Another company that got in on the April Fools’ Day fun was Muuna, a brand of cottage cheese. Like Auntie Anne’s, Muuna also sent out a press release sharing the details of its new product. However, instead of hawking hot yoga studios, Muuna made a very on-trend move and announced it was debuting the world’s first-ever cannabis cottage cheese. “Satisfy the munchies with a new take on the trending plant-forward diet,” the release stated. Though a product like this might sound a bit far-fetched, it’s not outside row realm of possibility considering we live in a world with and increasing amount of CBD-infused foods and drinks. The coffee giant tweeted on April 1 that it was “so excited” to announce its newest line of concept stores called Pupbucks. The make-believe establishments were billed as “Starbucks for your best fur-iend.” Pizza Hut also turned its attention to dogs and pranked people by tweeting that it had formed a Pizza M.U.T.T. delivery team – a fleet of very, very good dogs that had been trained to deliver food to your front door. The Return of Blueberry Pie Oreos

In late March, the Candy Hunting Instagram account shared a photo of a Blueberry Pie Oreos package and claimed the seasonal, limited-edition cookies were coming back after a prolonged absence. Oreo fans were delighted, but by April 1 the jig was up. “Sadly Mondelez [the maker of Oreos] does not have plans to bring back Blueberry Pie Oreos,” Candy Hunting stated in a follow-up post explaining the prank. “I'm sorry to those who will be upset by this news.”

Cannabis Cottage Cheese

Muuna jumped on the foods-laced-with-marijuana trend by announcing, via a press release, that it had come out with cannabis cottage cheese – plain cottage cheese with a sprinkle of food-grade cannabis on the bottom. "At Muuna, we are embracing the trend in functional foods and we believe one such function is to promote a feeling of zen among our customers, after eating our product,” said Muuna CEO Gerard Meyer. “Euphoric vibes are just one delicious, spoonful away with this creamy, dreamy snack, coming straight from grass-fed cows.” Near the end of the press release, there is text that stated, “[This is] a spoof press release for April Fools’ Day!”

Auntie Anne’s Embraces Hot Yoga

The pretzel-packed establishment began circulating rumors in late March that each one of its more than 1,500 locations nationwide would be converted into a hot yoga studio on a rolling basis beginning on April 1. The fake exercise spaces were even poised to be staffed by pretzel certified yoga instructors – teachers trained in Auntie Anne’s proprietary hand-rolling techniques – and were set to feature “heavenly scent” aromatherapy designed to smell like the “intoxicating scent of baking pretzels,” according to a press release, which also included text stating it was part of a prank.

SodaStream Turns Burps Into Carbonated Water

SodaStream announced the launch of SodaStreamMe, an on-the-go bottle that enables users to carbonate their own drinks simply by blowing into the cap, releasing excess CO2, on April 1. “SodaStreamMe intends to create a cure for people who suffer from excess levels of CO2, allowing them to turn their burps into sparkling water!” a statement said. “This new product was based on research about the excess amount of CO2 in space from astronaut Scott Kelly … or is it all an April Fools’ joke?” If you guessed the latter, you would be correct.

McDonald’s Releases “Shake Sauce”

McDonald’s shared a video via Twitter of its new (fake) “shake sauce” packets. As seen in the clip, the little containers we designed to house small portions of milkshakes intended for dipping nuggets, fries and apple pies, but the new condiment doesn’t actually exist.

Starbucks Goes to the Dogs

“We're so excited to announce our newest concept stores: Starbucks for your best fur-iend. #Pupbucks,” the coffee giant tweeted. In a video about the sadly unreal venture, a barista explains: “The clientele is a bit more unpredictable, but they do always come when their name is called.”

And So Does Pizza Hut

Continuing with the dog theme, the pizza chain announced the debut of the Pizza M. U. T. T. delivery team, a group of dogs trained to deliver food right to your door. “Use code 30OFFAPRIL1 for 30% OFF menu-priced pizzas. Today only,” the tweet said. In an accompanying video, Pizza Hut made it clear this initiative was just a joke.

Red Lobster’s Licorice Straws

The seafood chain figured it would have a little fun with the drama surrounding the use of plastic straws and the negative impact they have on the environment, so the restaurant tweeted that it was time for a change. “Starting Summer 2019, red licorice straws will be our 1st test for an eco-friendly alternative for plastic straws!” the message read. “Soon, you may even be able to enjoy that drink with a Cheddar Bay Biscuit flavored licorice straw.”

Disney World Introduces “Snears”

The theme park is known for its wide array of Mickey Mouse ears and whimsical food offerings, but the two are generally separate. However, on April 1 the Walt Disney World twitter account announced the debut of “Snears” – ears you can use to hold snack such as popcorn and turkey legs. Disney declared “#AprilFools” in an accompanying video.
