The Real World
The Real World is a reality series that premiered on MTV in 1992, making it the longest-running program in the network’s history.
The show was inspired by the 1973 PBS documentary series An American Family. Each season, a group of young adults are picked to temporarily live together in a new city and filmed nonstop.
The series introduced new reality franchises to MTV, most notably Road Rules and The Challenge, the latter of which features previous contestants from both shows. Four seasons of The Real World Homecoming aired in 2007, 2021 and 2022, bringing former cast members back to the lofts they lived in during their original seasons.
As of 2019, 33 seasons of The Real World have aired.
