Katie DeJean, the mother of Philadelphia Eagles star Cooper DeJean, acknowledged there’s been nearly as much interest in her son’s personal life as his professional one in recent months.
Cooper, 23, has recently been seeing Dallas Cowboys cheerleader Abby Summers, with the pair debuting their relationship publicly at the Kentucky Derby in May. Summers, 25, made a splash while securing her spot on the squad as a rookie during season 2 of Netflix’s America’s Sweethearts.
Prior to Summers, Cooper was romantically linked to WWE star Nikki Bella.
Despite all of the conversation, Katie said her son does not “extensively” discuss his dating life with her.
“And I’m OK with that,” Katie exclusively told Us via her partnership with Always Discreet. “I know there’s a lot of people that want to know all the ins and outs of what’s going on inside his life outside of football.”
She continued, “I know a little bit but I don’t know all the details, I guess would be the right thing to say. I know enough!”
Cooper was selected by the Eagles with the 40th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The cornerback has blossomed into a star during his first two seasons, most memorably returning an interception for a touchdown off Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, in Super Bowl LIX.
Katie noted that having Cooper burst onto the NFL scene during such a time of social media hot takes has been “good and bad.”
“I know when I see things about my son, I mute the comments because I’m like, ‘I know what I know, so what everybody else’s opinions are, they don’t mean anything,’” Katie said. “It’s nice to see when there’s good things written or talked about your son, but there’s always those people that don’t have such nice things to say. So, I usually avoid the comments.”
While Katie and her husband, Jason DeJean, support Cooper and their two other sons – Beckett, 20, a former football player at the University of South Dakota, and Jaxx, 16, who is committed to play football at the University of Iowa next year – the mother of three is also speaking out on behalf of the 60 percent of women ages 45 and older who experience bladder leaks on behalf of Always Discreet and its “Protect the Moment” campaign.
“As a mom, there’s so many moments you don’t want to miss, whether it’s on the football field, family milestones or just family time in general,” Katie explained. “Those moments are really special to me, so I’m sure they’re special to other women.”
Katie has teamed up with fellow NFL moms Elisha Jarrett – mother of Chicago Bears lineman, Grady Jarrett – and Angela Burns – mother of New York Giants linebacker, Brian Burns – on the campaign, a sign of the true community built between moms in the league.
“It’s a job to be the mom of an NFL player,” Katie said. “We cheer each other’s sons on, too, even though they’re on the opposing team. But it’s fun to bounce ideas off them, see how they treat a gameday versus how I treat a gameday, or how they treat their child versus how I treat mine. It’s a good support system overall.”
