Rory McIlroy just made golf history — again. But honestly? His mom might have stolen the show.

The 36-year-old won his second straight green jacket at the 2026 Masters Tournament on Sunday, April 13, beating Scottie Scheffler by one shot. That alone is a massive deal.

He’s now just the fourth golfer ever to win back-to-back Masters, joining Jack Nicklaus (1965–1966), Nick Faldo (1989–1990) and Tiger Woods (2001–2002).

But it’s the family story behind this win that has the internet in its feelings.

During the final round, eagle-eyed fans spotted something special sitting next to Rory McIlroy’s mom, Rosie McIlroy.

It was a custom purse — and it featured a print of last year’s New York Times newspaper article that announced her son’s career grand slam after his first Augusta win.

A whole handbag dedicated to her son’s greatest achievement? That’s elite mom energy. Social media ate it up.

“A lovely personal touch—small moments like that really show how meaningful the win is for the whole family,” one X user wrote of the handbag.

“There is literally nothing not awesome about this,” another X user wrote.

Rory McIlroy’s Mom Almost Didn’t Attend the Masters

Here’s the thing — Rory’s parents, Rosie and Gerry McIlroy, weren’t even supposed to be there.

They missed last year’s Masters entirely because they had just bought a home in Ireland and were busy moving in during tournament week. Rory won anyway.

So naturally, his parents became convinced their absence was the good luck charm.

“Which they said was a good thing,” Rory said in 2025 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, per USA Today. “They were glad they had something to do to take their mind off of what was happening at the Masters.”

Rory confirmed during the green jacket ceremony that it took real effort to get them to Augusta this time around.

“They weren’t here last year to celebrate with us, and surprisingly, I had to convince them to come this year, because they thought the reason that I won was because they weren’t here. I’m glad that we proved that wrong,” he said.

Rory McIlroy’s Emotional Tribute to Mom and Dad

After sinking his winning putt, Rory walked straight to his family. First, his daughter Poppy. Then his wife, Erica Stoll. Then his parents.

In an interview with Jim Nantz and Fred Ridley, he explained the superstition that almost kept them away.

“It’s the second Major win my mum has been at, she was at Hoylake in 2014 so there was a piece of them that didn’t want to come this year, because they didn’t come last year and maybe that was the reason [that I won],” he said, per the Irish Times.

“I’m so glad that they got to experience that today. We’re all going to have a great time tonight,” he added.

Then came the moment that had everyone reaching for tissues.

“Mum and dad, I owe everything to you…” he said during the green jacket ceremony, choking back tears. “You’re the most wonderful parents, and if I could be half the parent to Poppy as you were to me, then I know I’ve done a good job.”

During his post-ceremony press conference, Rory revealed he had to fight back emotions while still playing.

“I caught myself a couple of times on the golf course thinking about them, and I was like ‘No, not yet, not yet’,” he said.

“It’s really cool to have them here. They missed it last year and the first thing I wanted to do was fly home to see them because I obviously wouldn’t be sitting up here if it wasn’t for them,” he continued.

Rory now has six major wins to his name — the 2011 U.S. Open, 2012 and 2014 PGA Championship, 2014 Open Championship and the 2025 and 2026 Masters.

He’s the 15th golfer in PGA history to win at least six and the second European.

But at the end of the day, it all came back to family.

“When the ball trickled by and I marked it there from two inches or whatever I just looked at the back of the green because I saw my mum and dad and Erica and Poppy and I was just like ‘I can’t believe I’ve just done it again,’” he said in the press conference.

“More joy. Not as emotional, but just, wow, it’s amazing. I can’t believe I did it again,” he added.
