Scottie Scheffler had moments of looking very human during his opening round at the 2026 Memorial Championship — and he gave his caddie, Ted Scott, an earful about it.
Scheffler, 29, sank his tee shot into the water on the par-3 16th hole at Dublin, Ohio’s Muirfield Village Golf Club on Thursday, June 4, which he seemed to partially blame on Scott for judging the wind incorrectly.
“I never thought that was in the water,” Scheffler said, standing at the tee box looking befuddled. “I don’t know what to do.”
As Scheffler stood around in shock, Scott — who started working with Scheffler in 2021 — began walking down the fairway as he attempted to respond to the golfer.
“I can’t hear a word you’re saying, dude,” Scheffler said. “I feel like that was a good shot.”
Scott replied, “It was a good shot.”
“Now I’m in the water,” Scheffler rebutted. “Because [the wind] came in out of the right. Absolutely flushed a 7 iron and we get the wind wrong and I’m in the water. I don’t think you understand how frustrating that is. Like, that was a good shot. Really was, flushed it, liked the line.”
Scheffler shot a one-over par 73 on Thursday, eerily close to the cut line. After his round, it was clear he was still miffed about his errant water shot.
“That’s just another really good iron shot, and the wind switched from down off the right to pretty significantly in off the right,” he told reporters. “If it’s down off the right, that ball’s probably where I hit my wedge shot to. Just don’t really know what I’m supposed to do there outside of trying to hit a good shot, and then it’s frustrating when it doesn’t work out, especially when it doesn’t work out in that direction.”
He added, “ All you can do is just try to hit good shots. It can be very frustrating sometimes when you feel like you’re hitting good shots and then you’re going to the drop zone.”
Scheffler is attempting to win his third consecutive Memorial Championship, but he also has his sights set on the 126th U.S. Open, which begins June 18 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York. Earlier this week, Scheffler took a trip to Shinnecock to check out the grounds.
“That was my first time on property,” Scheffler told reporters on Wednesday, June 3. “It was kind of what I expected. I had heard some rumors about how difficult the greens were. I was a little surprised at the width of the fairways, but the green complexes there are extremely difficult, and I think that’s where the greatest challenge comes from.”
