Video has emerged of the car accident that cost ESPN’s Matt Miller his left arm.
The footage, obtained by The California Post on Tuesday, July 14, shows the moment that Miller’s Ford Bronco veered over the centerline, colliding with a truck and careening off the road into a patch of grass.
The accident occurred on June 17 in Missouri, resulting in Miller being ejected from the car and airlifted to a local hospital. The driver of the other vehicle was uninjured. At the time of publication, it remains unknown if drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash.
In a message via X on June 23, Miller told followers that he sustained significant injuries, “including multiple fractures and broken ribs.”
“I also underwent a life-saving amputation of my left arm,” he continued. “While I have a long road ahead, I’m focused on my recovery and taking things one day at a time. Thank you for the overwhelming support, prayers and kind messages — they have meant so much to me and my family during this time.”
Miller’s family set up a GoFundMe while he was still in the ICU to cover medical costs and expenses for his loved ones as they help him recover.
“I was leaving my sister’s house,” a witness said in an accident report obtained by The Post. “I might have been maybe 100 yards behind. I witnessed the Bronco just a hard swerve into the semi’s lane. The semi tried to swerve. It made contact. I haven’t ever seen a car explode like that. I ran to the Bronco and there was no one in the vehicle. I heard groaning behind me.”
As Miller recuperates, controversy continues to swirl around him with the Missouri Attorney General’s Office investigating allegations he scammed members of his fantasy football leagues.
The AG’s office got involved when a Reddit thread went viral after the accident titled, “Matt Miller Leagues and Scam.”
“Anyone in a league run by ESPN’s Matt Miller and not get paid as a winner? He has ghosted ours since the championship and provided 0 communication on what funds went to charity/providing payouts to the winners,” read the first post, added on May 21. “I’ve seen a few others in the same boat and wanted to see if this is a wider spread problem than a couple leagues.”
Subsequent replies included multiple people claiming to have had similar problems with Miller’s leagues.
After Awful Announcing published a story about it on July 1, the outlet said it received “over 30 messages from additional fantasy league participants or scouting lesson purchasers who have shared similar stories.”
“I saw Matt post he needed another team for a league,” one alleged victim told Awful Announcing. “I didn’t even know it was a charity league until he explained it to me. I love fantasy, so this seemed cool to do with a known person, although you couldn’t win much because half the pool was going to charity. Whatever. I was down.
The user continued, “Once I sent the Venmo, that was pretty much it. I am not sure half the teams in the league were real people. They were auto-drafts. Matt wasn’t involved at all. He had a team, but he clearly wasn’t managing it. He stopped returning DMs. Everyone was confused. I won the league and kept messaging him about payment, but never heard back. I reported him to [fantasy site] Sleeper, who told me they had banned him for being a known scammer. That’s when I realized, ‘Oh, there are other people who are having this experience.’”
Miller has not addressed the accusations.
