Oops. Anna Wintour is apologizing for calling Kanye West’s Yeezy Season 3 show “migrant chic.” The Vogue editor in chief made the controversial comment during an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers on April 13 while recalling her experience at the show last February.
“Eventually, they did turn up, and The Life of Pablo concert started, and the migrant chic fashion show started, and they were both wonderful,” Wintour told the late-night host while talking about the Kardashian family and fellow celeb attendees including Jay Z.
The 66-year-old fashion guru received major backlash after the comment, with users on social media blasting it as “wholly inappropriate.”
“I apologize if my remark was offensive in any way,” Wintour said in a recent statement to the Guardian. “The migrant crisis is real, and I didn’t intend to trivialize that issue.”
In her defense, West’s collection and highly anticipated album release party was reportedly influenced by a Rwandan refugee camp.
According to Time, the invitation to the sold-out Madison Square Garden show featured a photo taken in 1995 by British photographer Paul Lowe of “thousands of Hutus crammed into a Kibeho camp shortly after Tutsi soldiers massacred thousands of people there.”
