Gabi Butler’s beauty knowledge is just as impressive as the 22-year-old’s tumbling and flying skills. As part of the Florida native’s new partnership with Murad, she chatted with Us Weekly’s Stylish about her love for the skincare brand, as well as her best makeup tips and competitive cheerleading beauty must-haves.
In the rare case that you haven’t binge-watched Netflix’s Cheer, Butler was one of the docuseries’ standout cast members. The show followed the Navarro College cheerleading program as they prepared to defend their title at the NCA College Nationals in Daytona, Florida. Spoiler: They did, in fact, win.
Viewers watched the ladies glam up for competition, perfecting their hair in the sport’s signature half-up pouf and expertly applying flash lashes. Nevertheless, Butler tells Us that she likes to try and “keep a natural look” when she’s on the mat. One of the go-to products she always keeps in her gym bag is Rock Your Hair Volumizing Hairspray ($22), which keeps hair in place while flipping, flying and dancing.
“I also use their leave-in conditioner because it literally just melts away the hairspray after I’m done and keeps me from having to tear my hair out when I’m brushing it out,” adds Butler.
As for makeup, Butler told Us one of her favorite tip for seamless eyeliner application. “One of the coolest tricks I learned from one of my friends was to put tape underneath my lower eyelid to help keep my eyeliner straight and with a crisp edge,” she explains. “Almost like how painters use tape to create a straight line. It works every time!”
As much as Butler loves her glam, she loves to take diligent care of her skin too. “In the morning, I start with Murad’s Clarifying Cleanser followed by my newest favorite, Clarifying Oil-Free Water Gel as my daily moisturizer,” says the cheer pro. “Then I finish with the Oil and Pore Controlling SPF 45. Sun protection is so important, so I never skip that step.”
“In the evening, I re-use the Clarifying Cleanser and Outsmart Acne Clarifying Treatment to get rid of any excess oil that is sitting on my skin,” she continues. And if Butler’s experiencing a breakout, she uses the brand’s Rapid Relief Acne Spot Treatment which she adoringly calls “magic in a tube,” claiming that her “breakouts improve overnight.”
Besides perfecting her beauty routine, Butler’s working on “several new projects” at the moment and many of them are hush-hush. But one that she can talk about is her new weekly podcast called The After-Mat. She explores “challenges that athletes face today” and a glimpse of their lives “off the mat.” Stay tuned — it’s coming soon!
