Peachy keen! Drew Barrymore looked radiant at a screening for her most recent film, Miss You Already, in NYC on Sunday, Oct. 25, thanks to her ultra-flattering bright peach lip.
Despite the hue’s bright, summery vibe, Barrymore’s makeup artist, Robin Fredriksz, says it’s not just for beach weather — it can be worn year-round. “I wanted to give [Barrymore] a strong but soft lip, so I went with Flower’s ‘So Gladiola’ because I wanted to keep it fresh,” Fredriksz exclusively tells Us Weekly of the beauty crush-worthy color. “The peachy pink in the color is a great alternative to red for fall.”
The vibrant shade was inspired by Barrymore’s bold, plunging Stella McCartney dress with saturated floral embroidery. “I’ve been working with Drew for 15 years and this is the first time I saw her wear something in that cut,” she says. “I really got inspired by that and said, ‘Let’s just make this fresh and young and bright.'”
Working from the old idea that you can have either a bold lip or a bold eye, but not both, Fredriksz then decided to downplay the Charlie’s Angels alum’s eyeshadow. “I didn’t put any hard lines on her eyes,” Fredriksz, who also works with Christina Hendricks, Uma Thurman, and Rashida Jones, tells Us. “I used Flower Shadow Play’s eyeshadow quad in ‘Twilight Moon’ on her eyes with a wet brush, which gives more intensity. If you use eyeshadows wet, they smudge out really nicely.”
Though Fredriksz knows that some people shy away from bright corals and peaches because they’re worried they’ll get washed out, she confidently says that these colors work on all skin tones. “If you’re going to wear it, wear it bright, not sheer. Then, when you put it on, it will really show the color,” she explains to Us. To get the most saturated hue, Fredriksz advises to apply foundation on the lips and then put the color over it.
And if you’re still worried about pulling off the look, do what Fredriksz did with Barrymore, 40, and apply some of the color on your cheeks too — that way, the lips and cheeks will play off of each other. “I shaded [Drew’s] cheek bones and put the lip color on the balls of her cheeks. You can be fair skinned, olive skinned, it doesn’t matter. You can wear bright colors,” Fredriksz said. “Just throw some mascara on with it, and it will pop.”
