Whether you're hitting the beach this summer or trying to stay cool at the office, make sure your grooming routine doesn't melt down with these tried-and-true tips to prevent common makeup malfunctions. HOW TO PREVENT….A SEVERE SUNBURN
Want to avoid a sunburned "raccoon eye" look like Kim Kardashian's after catching too many rays? Madonna's dermatologist Fredric Brandt advises coating your complexion with a zinc oxide-based sunscreen for face that's at least SPF 30. For added protection, dab on mineral powder foundation with titanium dioxide, which naturally blocks UV rays.
HOW TO PREVENT….SWEAT STAINS
Rely on an antiperspirant containing an aluminum-based ingredient that stops the flow of sweat. Roll on a layer and allow it to dry before getting dressed. Another option for extreme cases: "Botox shots every six months can inhibit sweat production," Brandt says.
HOW TO PREVENT….BOTCHED SELF-TANNER
Exfoliate skin and moisturize with an oil-free lotion before applying self-tanner, says bronzing pro Polly Osmond. Blend, then wash hands immediately to avoid orange palms. Already have stains? Rub marks with a cotton ball soaked in lemon juice, which lightens spots naturally.
HOW TO PREVENT…RAZOR BURN
Shaving reduces the top layer of skin by 20 percent and can result in irritation and dryness. To avoid feeling the (razor) burn, Beverly Hills dermatologist Dr. Debra Luftman suggests keeping razors — which should be replaced every two weeks — in a place other than the shower. "Items left in the shower can become breeding ground for bacteria, which can lead to underarm discomfort, or, even worse, infection," she explains.
HOW TO PREVENT….MELTING EYE MAKEUP
Prep lids with a primer before applying waterproof eyeliner and mascara. "The silicone in primer repels moisture so even non-waterproof stay put longer," says makeup pro Vera Steinberg, who counts Rashida Jones as a client.
