Move over, Duchess! Mindy Kaling proved that Kate Middleton doesn’t monopolize the market on chic coat dresses on the episode “Annette Castellano Is My Nemesis” of The Mindy Project, which aired on Sept. 23.
Read on to find out the story behind the multitasking look from the show’s costume designer Salvador Perez.
“I found this amazing magenta wool gabardine and our workroom made the dress,” Perez tells Us Weekly of the custom design. “We added vintage buttons that I had been saving for something special, and they worked perfectly.” Perez then contrasted the bold color with statement earrings from Neiman Marcus and aqua pumps by Manolo Blahnik. “We fell in love with them so we bought every color available,” Perez tells Us.
For the menswear-inspired look, Perez once again custom-made an outfit to fit the scene’s needs. “Using the fabric in two directions really makes a statement,” Perez tells Us. “Then I found this great floral blouse from Equipment that tied in perfectly.” Perez added edge with a Joie leather jacket and then finished with a Celine bag and green suede Kate Spade shoes. “The whole outfit came together so easily,” Perez says.
“We want to remind the audience that Mindy is a doctor, so we try to put her in a lab coat or scrubs at least once an episode,” Perez says of this episode’s doctor-y style. “It kills me to cover up a great dress like this Trina Turk but it’s a necessary evil.” Naturally, multi-colored earrings from BaubleBar added a dash of fun to her work look.
