Dressing for the part!
Sutton Foster and Hilary Duff‘s new TV Land show, Younger, premieres Tuesday, March 31, and in the comedy, the actresses are outfitted by none other than Patricia Field, who famously dressed Sarah Jessica Parker‘s Carrie and her best friends on Sex and the City.
Yes, the hit HBO series was one of the most style-inspirational shows of all time. (The shoes alone!) But in a way, the clothes are even more important in Younger, because they have to convince viewers that Liza (Foster), a 40-year-old single mom, can believably pull of being 26 to snag a publishing job.
“When I first read the script, my first thing about Liza was, ‘How am I going to make a 40-year-old person look 25? I’m not a magician!,'” Field confessed to Us Weekly.
Perhaps not, but the designer does have a signature uptown-downtown hybrid style that screams young and fabulous. When she’s not home on her couch snuggled up in chambray, Foster’s Liza is parading around her office in leather skirts, floral dresses with dangerously high hemlines, and, yes, the quintessential college-girl staple, the beanie.
But the true key to transforming Foster, Field says, is the (seemingly aging in reverse) leading lady herself. “When I met Sutton and [experienced] her organic, expressive energy, I was like, ‘Holy s—t! She can do this,'” Field told Us. “Watching her play the character, you never think, ‘This is bulls—t.’ You don’t even think about [her age]. It’s in her movement, her expressions.”
To see Field’s styling in action, tune in to the series premiere of Younger tonight, March 31, on TV Land at 10 p.m. EST.
