Shailene Woodley’s stylist Karla Welch is addressing the not-so-flattering comments about the actress’ 2026 Emmys look.
“Love or hate something fine but it’s an opinion,” Welch, 52, wrote via Instagram Threads on Tuesday, September 15. “It can even be a conversation but being super rude and mean and taking glee from it, well that says a lot more about the mouths it’s coming from. 🖤.”
Welch’s fans were quick to support her — and the Big Little Lies star’s ensemble — in the comments section.
“The whole point of fashion is to play and try new things and be adventurous! Most are too scared to! Most importantly, she looked so happy and at ease, and like she was having so much fun and feeling like the best version of herself!” one wrote, which Welch “liked.” Another added, “She looked amazing!”

Woodley wore a blue Balenciaga top featuring a low-cut scoop neckline, paired with bedazzled wide-leg pants, for TV’s biggest night. She accentuated the look with a pair of maroon leather gloves and a rainbow stone necklace.
For glam, she donned soft makeup — including bronzed cheeks, light mascara and a pink lip — that accentuated her dewy skin and manicured eyebrows. Her brunette hair was parted down the middle and slicked back in a low ponytail, covering her ears.
After walking the red carpet, social media users didn’t hold back with their thoughts on Woodley’s outfit.
One questioned via Instagram, “Who did this to her?” while another commented, “I strongly dislike this from the glam/hair to everything surrounding it 😵💫.” A third suggested Woodley finds a new team altogether: “Shailene needs a new team. This whole look is singularly unflattering. The hair is appalling. The top doesn’t fit. The pairing of the top and pants is painfully pedestrian. The opera gloves and the necklace would be fine in an entirely other outfit. This look is a crime.”
On Tuesday, Melissa Rivers exclusively opened up to Us about who was on her worst dressed list, and Woodley’s name was — again — mentioned.
“I see Shailene’s look walking down the runway,” Rivers explained. “It’s not for civilians.” She added that she was wearing Balenciaga and joked that “someone over there clearly does not like” Woodley.
