Born in Israel in 1981, Natalie Portman moved to the U.S. with her family at age three, and began her acting career at age 12.
After forays in an off-Broadway production and roles in several films, she rose to fame with a three-film deal as Queen Padme Amidala in the prequels to Star Wars.
After a Golden Globe nomination for her role in 2000's Where the Heart Is, Portman won her first Golden Globe in 2004 for her role in 2004's Closer; that same year, she saw an Oscar nomination for her role in Cold Mountain. In 2011, the Black Swan star beat out Michelle Williams, Nicole Kidman, Annette Bening and Jennifer Lawrence in the Best Actress category at the Academy Awards.
Her past hook-ups include former model Nathan Bogle and indie rocker Devendra Banhart. In December 2010, Portman announced she was pregnant and engaged to choreographer Benjamin Millepied. They welcomed a baby boy in June 2011.
