Anna Wintour on Kim Kardashian, Kanye West Vogue Cover: “Entirely Our Idea to Do It,” West Didn’t Beg

Editor-in-chief Anna Wintour says putting Kim Kardashian and Kanye West on the April cover was "entirely" Vogue's idea and West didn't "beg" her to do it.

Sweet Yeezus, Kimye's on the fashion bible! Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are the new cover stars of Vogue's April 2014 issue — and it was all thanks to the most famous fashion editrix in the world. In the issue's editor's letter, Vogue's editor-in-chief Anna Wintour wrote a strongly-worded explanation of her decision to put the rapper and reality star on the fashion magazine's coveted cover.

"Part of the pleasure of editing Vogue, one that lies in a long tradition of this magazine, is being able to feature those who define the culture at any given moment, who stir things up, whose presence in the world shapes the way it looks and influences the way we see it," Wintour, 64, wrote. "I think we can all agree on the fact that that role is currently being played by Kim and Kanye to a T. (Or perhaps that should be to a K?)"

"As for the cover, my opinion is that it is both charming and touching, and it was, I should add, entirely our idea to do it; you may have read that Kanye begged me to put his fiancee on Vogue's cover. He did nothing of the sort," she explained. "The gossip might make better reading, but the simple fact of the matter is that it isn't true."

West, 36, has previously been outspoken about wanting to see his wife-to-be on the cover of Vogue. "There's no way Kim Kardashian shouldn't be on the cover of Vogue," West argued to Ryan Seacrest in October 2013. "She's like the most intriguing woman right now. She's got Barbara Walters calling her like everyday . . . and collectively we're the most influential with clothing." (West has his A.P.C. and DW Kanye West clothing lines, while Kardashian has her Kardashian Kollection line with sisters Kourtney and Khloe.)

Despite earlier reports that Wintour was against featuring the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star, 33, on Vogue, Conde Nast's creative director seems to agree with West that the couple is influential. She continued: "There's barely a strand of the modern media that the Kardashian Wests haven't been able to master, and for good reason: Kanye is an amazing performer and cultural provocateur, while Kim, through her strength of character, has created a place for herself in the glare of the world's spotlight, and it takes real guts to do that."

On the cover, shot by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz, Kardashian and West look like a bride and groom. In behind-the-scenes video from the shoot, Kardashian models wedding gowns and the couple poses with 9-month-old daughter North.
