Budweiser’s Super Bowl 50 Commercial: Dame Helen Mirren Chides Drunk Drivers in #GiveADamn Spot

This Dame gives a damn. Budweiser released one of its Super Bowl 50 commercials on Tuesday, February 2, starring Oscar winner Helen Mirren. The spot, aptly titled “Simply Put” and promoted as part of the beer distributor’s #GiveADamn campaign, is a call to stop drunk drivers on the night of America’s biggest sporting event of the year.

“Hello,” the Woman in Gold actress, 70, says in a dimly lit booth of some fine-dining establishment. “I’m Helen Mirren, a notoriously frank and uncensored British lady.”

The beloved actress then tears into drunk drivers. “If you drive drunk, you — simply put — are a shortsighted, utterly useless, oxygen-wasting human form of pollution, a Darwin award-deserving selfish coward,” she snipes.

She goes on to appeal to fans’ better nature. “Now, the chances are you’re a fun, solid, respectable human being. Don’t be a pillock,” she continues. “Your friends and family thank you.”

In a press release to Us Weekly, Anheuser-Busch explained why it enlisted Mirren for its 2016 Super Bowl spot. “To spark conversations about this vital issue on one of the biggest drinking occasions of the year, the brand has called upon actress Helen Mirren, with her mix of gravitas and charm, to demand that beer drinkers make a plan to get home safely,” the beverage giant says.

The campaign doesn’t stop with an ad, though. Budweiser will donate $1 towards safe ride home programs for each use of the hashtag #GiveADamn on social media through 11:59 p.m. ET on Sunday, February 7.

And for those who miss Budweiser’s beloved Clydesdales? No worries! The beer distributor added in its press release that another 30-second spot, featuring the famed horses, will debut during the big game.

Tune in to Super Bowl 50 at 6:30 p.m. EST on Sunday, February 7, on CBS.
