Cameron Diaz knows what she wants, and it seems she already has it. The Annie actress opened up about what makes for a good relationship — and dished about her former flames — in Cosmopolitan’s January 2015 issue.
“You have to find someone in the same place as you are. Timing is everything. If you get into a relationship where you want something the guy doesn’t want, it’s never gonna work. You’re never going to get him to be in that place,” Diaz, 42, tells the mag. “No matter how old you are, finding the guy who’s in the same place as you are and wants to show up is the only way a relationship works, period.”
Timing may be key, but having a friend set you up is also helpful. After all, pal Nicole Richie was the one that introduced Diaz to her current boyfriend Benji Madden, 35, back in May. (Richie is married to the Good Charlotte rocker’s brother, Joel Madden.) Diaz recently sparked rumors of an engagement when she was spotted wearing a diamond ring in October. She refused to comment about future wedding plans to Cosmo, but did reflect back on her past romances.

“Here’s the thing. You make the same mistake over and over again until you learn your lesson,” Diaz, whose famous exes include Justin Timberlake, Matt Dillon, Jared Leto, and Diddy, said of choosing the wrong guys. “We girls sometimes do the thing where we pick the same person over and over again — they look and seem different, but deep down, they’re the same. And that’s on us.”
