The gay rights movement has found an unlikely new supporter: Eminem.

In an interview with The New York Times, the rapper, 37 -- known for using homophobic slurs in his music -- says he supports gay marriage.

"I think if two people love each other, then what the hell?" he says. "I think that everyone should have the chance to be equally miserable, if they want."

Inside Eminem's 20 pill-a-day addiction

Seems Eminem (who has been sober for the past two years) is a different man these days.

"It’s the new tolerant me!" says the rapper.

The Times notes that his new album, Recovery, is less violent and graphic than his previous work.

Does that mean that Slim Shady, his raping and killing alter ego, is gone?

"Shady still exists," he says. "But I don’t think the subjects on this record call for, you know, bring the chainsaws and axes out and murder everyone on this record. There was so much stuff like that off the last record that I felt like I was starting to run it into the ground. I think consciously I went in a different direction with this record."

He says he doesn't have any regrets about his past work.

"Anything I’ve ever said, I certainly was feeling at the time," he tells The Times. "But I think I’ve calmed down a bit. My overall look on things is a lot more mature than it used to be."

Some areas in his life still need to be improved: He says he has yet to make ammends with his estranged mother.

Says the rapper, "It’d be very hard to repair that relationship."

June 18, 2010 - 9:32pm Banana Says: AC is probably a disgruntled gay man who wishes he was normal and straight. So, you're telling me that if you were straight, you're normal? So some guy who takes photographs of little girls naked and then looks at them all day is normal? If this IS what you think, then YOU have problems, and you should really get that checked out. I'm not saying that gays don't also do things like this, they do. But society should not deem what it means to be 'normal', 'appropriate', 'traditional',or whatever. You should realise that it is 2010, and people have rights, and that the world is different than it was back in your day. I do have one question for any of you gay- haters, if you dare to answer it: Would you accept it if your brother came out? Just wondering.

  • June 23, 2010 - 6:14am Catherine

You know, some doctors are now saying that homosexuality is in your genes (just like whether you have dark hair or light hair, or if you are black or white).. So are you saying that we should support going against what BIOLOGY has in store for us? Just because people say that homosexuality is wrong and that they are banning gay marriage, that isn't going to stop the fact that being gay is, quite simply, a fact of life. It won't go away. You can try and suppress it for your entire life and live a lie by pretending that you love your wife and your lovely home in the suburbs, when in fact BIOLOGY has determined that you're gay! So we should simply face the facts that some people are different, and thats okay! Or we can live in a world where we look at everything through rose-tinted glasses and deny that biology has pre-destined our fates. I know which I'd rather.

  • June 22, 2010 - 10:19am flyboy

So, coming from a straight male, and you homophobes will probably call me gay because if you aren't anti-gay you are anti-straight, like homosexuality is a threat to your heterosexuality, you are all freaks, deranged, and no, sorry, you are not normal. Don't lump yourself in with actual SANE heterosexuals. Really, we don't want you.

  • June 22, 2010 - 10:17am flyboy

Obviously, as we see from the comments of some of the perverted homophobes, homophobia is a disease and personality disorder. Look up the word phobia, and you'll see clearly, these people are not mentally sound. Let us go through their words and clear up their ignorant babble: 1)ALL of them OBSESS with anal sex. Hello, sex addicts, but HETEROSEXUALS have anal sex. Like a few of my boys. I've never done it personally but I sure would if given the chance, it's SEX people. 2)Oral sex is DIRTIER than anal sex as the mouth is the most dirty part of the body. I bet all of you homophobic freaks have oral. 3)There is NOTHING family values about denigrating an entire group of people. Respect, for yourself and others, is like one of the main tenants of family values. None of you homophobes are showing that. 4)Visualize gay sex in my head? People are trying to flaunt gay sex? Um, no, the fact is, you freaks are obsessed with something, that doesn't affect you, and then blaming others for your obsession. 5)The vagina was made for babies to exit, and the mouth was made for food. I guess vaginal and oral is also perverted sex. 6)It's not hard to understand why some people are gay, they are gay because they are attracted to the same-sex. They are not attracted to the opposite sex. I love plenty of men, I just don't want to have sex with them. But it's not all about sex, homophobes. Just like how it happens in nature. Being gay isn't all about sex, once again, you freaks are just really, really obsessed with it. 7)Freaks bringing up biology is funny. Um, this is common sense, if homosexuality were not biological, and were an overall negative, it would not be rampant in nature, and it would be something that negatively impacts a persons ability to live and function, and it doesn't. 8)Sex isn't all about making babies, I know I ain't thinking about kids when I have sex. In fact, babies is not a reason why people have sex at all, it's just a product of it. 9)What's real sex? What does that even mean? Hahahaha, freaks. 10)The legal rights of legal citizens doesn't impact anyone's life in any way.

i agree with lalagirl, what is it to everyone that people are gay? it's not like you are dealing with them :S

  • June 21, 2010 - 6:59pm lalagirl

oh shoot i thought they didn't post my first comment... my bad

  • June 21, 2010 - 3:26pm lalagirl

Coming from a straight girl, come on people. Just because someone is gay it doesn't mean they are going to come after you. They are normal people with normal lives and they choose to be with whoever makes them happy regardless of gender. It's not just about having sex, it's about relationships :S And if you don't agree then lock yourself in a room because this is the year 2010 and people are more open minded. I respect Eminem for being open minded and respectful to everyone and I bet a lot of other people does too.

  • June 21, 2010 - 3:20pm lalagirl

Wow i was reading the comments below, what the hell is it to your people that someone is gay? it's not like they are going to anal rape you if they see you :S they are normal people with normal lives and they choose their partners not just for sex like you all make it sound, but as a lifelong partner as straight people have husbands or wives. Gosh, open your mind a little, get out there. and if you don't like it then go live in a hole, you can't stop people from being who they are

  • June 21, 2010 - 3:17pm lalagirl

yay eminem! glad to here that you have an open mind unlike some people these days.

  • June 20, 2010 - 12:38am Gays are sex addicts

    *identities

  • June 20, 2010 - 12:38am Gays are sex addicts

They're so messed up b/c their whole identies are dependant on their orientation versus other aspects of their life. ENOUGH WITH THESE FREAKS.

  • June 20, 2010 - 12:34am Sorry - gay is not normal

Tell me one good reason why screwing someone in the azzz is normal??? TELL ME. Sorry, where waste is disposed -- that is not meant for sex, it's meant to get rid of the food we eat! Gays will never have real sex because the way they have sex is downright perverted. They're a bunch of horny losers who can't find someone of the opposite sex so they can make a REAL family together. And about the women (lesbians) how ridiculous. It's hard to fathom how women who should be friends only, can be sexually involved. It's very, very disgusting. THINK ABOUT IT. VISUALIZE IT IN YOUR HEADS. IT'S SICK!!!

  • June 19, 2010 - 6:27pm anony

babies are made by PROCREATION. There is no BIOLOGICAL reason to be gay. It serves no purpose, so FAMILY VALUES ALL THE WAY.

  • June 19, 2010 - 6:27pm anony

fudge packing isn't a human rights issue- it's a disgusting act of out of control people. I will not support any proposition that claims human rights violations blah blah blah when all it's REALLY about is gays wanting the stage to display their grossness. Some may be nice people, but the acts are truly reprehensible. YUCK.

  • June 19, 2010 - 9:50am flyboy

Banana, being straight doesn't make you "normal", as you have proven undoubtedly. Oh, and not everyone who supports, you know, human rights for legal human citizens, are gay or perverts. Since, you know, I'm neither. It's called doing the right thing. Lastly, why do people bring up babies when discussing marriage? Um, newsflash, people don't have sex for babies. Family values my ass. All families have a gay person in them and gay/lesbian couples create families. Guess that's something ignorant bigots cannot seem to realize, not everyone is straight. And that isn't a big deal.
