Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale's split was a "longtime coming," a source tells Us Weekly

Though the parents of Kingston, 9, Zuma, 6, and Apollo, 17 months, announced they were divorcing after 13 years of marriage in a joint statement to Us Weekly on Aug. 3, the split “was a long time coming,” an insider tells Us of Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale. "It only looks sudden, but everything was worked out months ago so paperwork could be filed and the marriage could be ended quickly and easily.” Stefani and Rossdale were last photographed out with their kids in Los Angeles on July 12.

The insider says that despite problems in the marriage, the Voice mentor, 45, and the rocker, 49, tried to save their union after the birth of their third son. “Things were rocky before then but they tried to make the marriage work,” the source tells Us. “But it just couldn’t. A lot of the feeling was gone.”

Still, even friends were surprised by the announcement. One shocked insider tells Us that Stefani recently “seemed very happy and was gushing about her life with four boys.” The insider continues that there were “no signs” a split was imminent.

The duo, who both cited irreconcilable differences in their divorce documents, are seeking joint custody. They also plan to divide their assets equally, per the first source, who notes that they did not have a prenuptial agreement.
