Ivanka, 34, and the Republican presidential nominee, 70, unveiled the plan on Tuesday, September 13, which would guarantee six weeks of paid maternity leave to new mothers, as well as other benefits.

According to the transcript, Cosmo reporter Prachi Gupta asked why same-sex couples, in which both parents are men, aren’t included in the plan, Ivanka responded, “The original intention of the plan is to help mothers in recovery in the immediate aftermath of childbirth.”

The interviewer continued to press her on the issue, saying, “I just want to be clear that, for same-sex adoption, where the two parents are both men, they would not be receiving special leave for that because they don’t need to recover or anything?”

The mom of three replied, “Well, those are your words, not mine. Those are your words. The plan, right now, is focusing on mothers, whether they be in same-sex marriages or not.”

Then, Gupta pointed out that the Donald called pregnancy an inconvenient thing for businesses in 2004. In response, Ivanka said, “I think that you have a lot of negativity in these questions,” she said. “So I don’t know how useful it is to spend too much time with you on this if you’re going to make a comment like that,” adding that the comments are an “unfair characterization of [my father’s] track record and his support of professional women.”

When Gupta followed up again about the 2004 remarks, explaining that “it is relevant that a presidential candidate made those comments,” Ivanka said, “Well, you said he made those comments. I don’t know that he said those comments.”

After answering one more question about how her father will pay for some of his expensive policy proposals, Ivanka cut the interview short. “I’m going to jump off, I have to run. I apologize,” she said.
