In case you were wondering, Johnny Depp “doesn’t give a f–k.” The Pirates of the Caribbean actor revealed in an interview with Details magazine that when it comes to the critics, he doesn’t have a care in the world.
“As Marlon [Brando] once so beautifully f–king said to me, ‘Life is a birdsong.’ That’s stuck with me,” Depp, 51, explained about his path to zero-f–ks-given. “For everybody, the clock’s ticking. The main thing is whether you sit there and stare at the clock in fear of your ultimate demise — which is pointless — or you just live.”
Depp’s attitude adjustment comes after having to deal with recent box office flops like Transcendence and The Lone Ranger. “What is really satisfying is, like Marlon, getting to that place where he just didn’t give a f–k,” Amber Heard’s fiancé explained. “First, I reached a point where I cared so much and was so diligent in terms of approaching the work. Then you get to where you care so f–king much that it gets goddamn beleaguering, you know? But then a great thing happens. Suddenly you care enough to not give a f–k, because not giving a f–k, that’s the total liberation. Being game to try anything.”
Despite “not giving a f–k”, Depp added that it is difficult attempting to surpass the success that was Pirates of the Caribbean. “It’s like being a dog at the track,” he said. “They expect you to live up to some race you happened to be in and won accidentally. From that first second, you’re nothing more than a commodity. They have expectations of another Pirates. It’s great if something works. Boy, that’s killer. But God, to have that as your design…it’s ugly, I think.”
The seemingly confident actor adds he’s “f—in’ shy,” too. “I’m f–kin’ shy, man,” the Sleepy Hollow actor told the mag. “I’m living, in a sense, like a fugitive. I don’t like to be in social situations — it’s fine for me in a weird way, having to run and hide. Less and less, I have the opportunity to observe, because I’m the one being observed.”
