Kelly Ripa Brings Up Michael Strahan’s Divorces on ‘Live’ and Gets a Totally Baffled Reaction

OK, then! Kelly Ripa asked her outgoing cohost, Michael Strahan, a rather personal question on Live with Kelly and Michael on Friday, April 29, and it had to do with his divorces.

Ripa, 45, kicked off Friday’s live broadcast by bringing up a story from the New York Post that she had read. “There’s a great article in the paper and I want to get your take on it, because I don’t have a take on it. But I want yours,” the bubbly star said to the former NFL player. “So you’ve gotten divorced. And anybody here, like, gotten divorced?”

Strahan, 44, looked up to the camera with a baffled expression as the audience chuckled in response.

“The article is nonspecific, but they’re saying it’s either the greatest plan ever or the dumbest plan ever,” Ripa continued. “It’s called ‘bird nesting,’ where instead of, you know, how you separate and then, you know, the children have to go between the parents. This is keeping the kids in the house and the parents rotating in and out of the house. To me, it sounds like a disaster.”

Strahan made a face at the camera and shook his head as Ripa continued: “It also sounds like something only rich people could do.”

Her cohost then chimed in on the topic. “If I’m sharing my house with my ex and she can get in with a key, I’m definitely locking the door,” Strahan said of his bedroom. “I don’t know. I couldn’t do that. No, no, no. We might as well stayed married and just went through everything we’re going through.”

While the audience laughed at Strahan’s reaction, Ripa sternly held up her hand and said: “Guess what this article says? A lot of people just stay in bad marriages because they can’t figure out the situation. They literally are just staying together, because they’re, like, we can’t afford to get divorced.”

“But I don’t like that idea,” Strahan interjected. “I look at it like this: If you’re in a relationship with somebody, apparently, there’s love there at some point … Things changed. But if things changed, it’s very important to be happy instead of being miserable together, to be happy by yourself, because your kids are going to pick up on whatever.” Strahan also noted that his ex-wife has a bigger home than he does.

Ripa has been married to her husband, Mark Consuelos, for 20 years. The couple celebrated their anniversary last weekend with a tropical getaway.

The former Giants defensive end was married to his first wife, Wanda Hutchins, from 1992 to 1996, and his second wife, Jean Muggli, from 1996 to 2006. He shares two kids with each of his ex-wives.

Live confirmed to Us Weekly this past Tuesday, April 26, that Strahan will be leaving the show four months ahead of schedule on May 13. He will join Good Morning America full-time in September.
