Forget a kiss at midnight on New Year's Eve -- basketball star LeBron James gave his girlfriend a great big diamond!

The Miami Heat player, 27, popped the question to longtime love Savannah Brinson, Saturday at the Shelborne hotel in South Beach during a private REMY MARTIN V dinner.
A source tells Us Weekly James, who celebrated his birthday on Friday, presented his high school sweetheart with a pear-shaped engagement diamond. The couple's two children, along with Dwayne Wade, Gabrielle Union, Lance Bass and Jamie Lynn Sigler, looked on as James asked for Brinson's hand.

Together since they were 16, the couple call themselves soulmates.
"I've definitely not put a fire under his ass," Brinson told Harper's Bazaar of tying the knot. "I would never rush him to do something like that."

But, says Brinson, of her fairytale romance with the athlete: "I feel like everything is happening because it's supposed to. It was all in the stars."
