Love & Hip Hop: New York star Yandy Smith’s first year of marriage isn’t exactly going according to plan. The reality star’s hubby of six months, Mendeecees Harris, was sentenced to eight years in prison on Tuesday, Dec. 1, for drug trafficking.
Harris, 37, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute and possess heroin and cocaine back in April. According to prosecutors, the Love & Hip Hop: New York star was involved in drug trafficking from 2005 to 2012.
Following the sentencing in an Rochester, N.Y., courtroom, Harris’ attorney Donald Thompson told Billboard, “The possibility of a jail sentence has been well known in the community, and he’s talked about that with kids who are coming up in difficult situations and have to make life choices, whether it’s a good idea to make a whole lot of money selling drugs or make less money and not have to be looking over your shoulder.”
Smith, 33, and Harris tied the knot in a televised ceremony in Brooklyn, N.Y., on May 25. The couple shares 10-month-old daughter Skylar. After her husband’s sentence was announced, Smith took to Instagram, sharing photos and videos of her man.
“Thank you for your continued support. You have no idea how much your love and encouragement means,” she captioned one. “We finally have closure and are prepared and ready for all the future holds. God and love always prevails. Thank you God for family and love.”
