Alright, alright, alright! Matthew McConaughey is returning to his alma mater the University of Texas at Austin to teach a film class this fall, the university announced on Thursday, June 30.
The Oscar-winning actor, 46, will coteach the class with Hunger Games director Gary Ross and university lecturer Scott Rice. McConaughey and Ross will take 30 lucky students “behind the scenes” of their recently released film Free State of Jones through recorded videos and one on-campus visit, according to the San Antonio Express-News. The movie is about a Confederate Army medic who gets branded as a deserter and is forced to run away, finding refuge with runaway slaves.
“He’s in the movies. He’s on the field. Now, Matthew McConaughey is in the classroom,” UT Austin wrote in a video on its Facebook page that introduced the school’s new professor.
The higher level class, which is part of the Moody College of Communications, will be open to juniors and seniors, and there are no prerequisites or fees to take the once-a-week course.
This is the second time McConaughey is coteaching this course. A similar class that showed students the filmmaking process for Free State of Jones was offered during the spring 2016 semester, but students could not take photos or videos and had to sign nondisclosures since the film had not yet been released.
The 1993 University of Texas graduate — who got his degree in radio, television and film — frequently returns to the campus for the Longhorns football games. Back in September 2014, he gave a motivational speech to the players and their coach to pump them up before a big game against the University of Kansas.
