Never a dull moment! It was all about wardrobe malfunctions and Queen Bey at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, Aug. 24. During the show, held at the The Forum in Inglewood, Calif., Nicki Minaj was caught undressed, Miley Cyrus kept us on our toes and Beyonce seriously claimed her throne. Here’s a look at some of the most memorable moments from the awards show.
Beyonce took the stage for 15 minutes to perform a medley of songs from her latest self-titled album before accepting the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. The songstress kicked off her sparkling performance with "Mine" then transitioned into favorites like "Drunk in Love" and "Partition," while also including lesser-known songs like the sex jam "Rocket" and the emotionally intense "Jealous." The best part of Bey’s performance? Watching husband Jay Z and daughter Blue Ivy cheer her on in the audience before presenting their main lady with the Video Vanguard Award.
Nicki Minaj helped kick off the awards show with Ariana Grande, Jessie J and a wardrobe malfunction! After sexily performing her new track “Anaconda” in a green sequined two-piece number, Minaj failed to complete a quick outfit change and had to hold her black mini dress together when she joined Grande and Jessie J on stage for “Bang Bang.” The rapper later told The Hollywood Reporter, “We ran out of time getting the dressed zipped up.”
Miley Cyrus made headlines at last year’s VMAs, but this year, the singer kept it much more low-key (aside from calling Ed Sheeran an "a--hole"). After winning Video of the Year for her hit “Wrecking Ball,” Cyrus let a homeless man named Jesse accept the award on her behalf.
Sam Smith fan alert! Kim Kardashian and younger half-sisters Kendall and Kylie Jenner got out of their seats to show their appreciation for Sam Smith during his performance of “Stay With Me.” Prior to swaying and singing along to the breakout singer’s jam, Kardashian introduced Smith’s performance, casually referring to the British singer as her “friend.”
Ha! Saturday Night Live star Jay Pharoah took the stage to poke fun at Jay Z while teasing the Artist to Watch Award. Pharoah joked about Beyonce’s husband’s parenting techniques to Blue Ivy and a new line of “premium cough syrup” called “Hovatussin” which is “available at local pharmacies and strip clubs.”
